Under his latest project The Polygon, Ramsey Neville steps up to the legendary SCI+TEC label with a collection of four tracks named after different locations or memories that have given him inspiration over the years. Neville is based in Brooklyn, New York, where he has established himself as one of the city’s most notable techno talents. His well formed sound has come on labels like Unity Records, Addeepted, SLC-6, Black Line + more, and last year he remixed for Josh Wink on Ovum Recordings while also landing on Techno Brooklyn Records. He runs the IMPULSE CØNTROL playlist on Spotify with 11k+ subscribers and is working on turning it into a label and party in 2023. We caught up with the man himself to find out more.

Hey, Ramsey Neville! Welcome to CelebMix! Could you say a few words about yourself?

Hey CelebMix, thanks for having me! I’m Ramsey, a techno producer and DJ based out of Brooklyn, New York.

How would you describe your sound? What genres would you place your music in?

I’d describe my sound as a bit raw, driving, and gritty, using a lot of field recording textures and sequenced synths in my tracks. Most of my music would be in the raw hypnotic genre of techno.

You are currently based in Brooklyn, which is an epicenter of art and music – how does your surroundings inspire you and influence your sound?

Living in Brooklyn is a constant source of inspiration for me. Just walking down the street you’ll see some of the most interesting people you’ve ever run into, or find creativity manifesting itself in different types of art or music around every corner. The fast-paced energy of the city is extremely motivating and drives my high-energy sound. Also, the winter season in New York is long, grey, and cold, so elements of that vibe definitely come through in my music.

You’ve just released your 4-track The Polygon EP on Dubfire’s SCI+TEC imprint. Could you tell us more about this project?

When I sat down to write these tracks, my goal was to channel the same type of energy I love to experience when immersed in a night out. The type of energy that’s both dark and brooding, but relentlessly hypnotic, where you can get lost in the music for hours at a time without coming up for air. To me, it’s these moments that allow us to be fully free, and capturing a piece of that journey is what defines this EP. Super excited for these tracks to come out, it’s been a long time in the works and am buzzing to be putting out music on this legendary label.

‘The Polygon EP’ sounds festival ready. When you produce, do you have a live crowd in mind?

Absolutely! My first love is being on the dance floor in the crowd listening to music, it’s always been my main source of inspiration when it comes to my productions. When I’m in the studio my main goal is to make music that I would love to hear when I’m at the club, which hopefully translates to other people dancing to it as well! I always think about how to best keep the energy high in my DJ sets, so when I produce I’m focused on creating memorable moments of tension and release that keep people moving throughout the night.

What is your process when you get in the studio?

When I get in the studio, I always try to approach each session with a goal in mind. It doesn’t always get accomplished lol, but I find it gives me a direction to go in, especially when I have limited time. Some days the goals are specific like adding polish to tracks that are nearly complete, or mixing down an EP. But other days my goals are more free-form, like spending a few hours coming up with new track ideas, or making drum grooves, or melodies, or taking a deep dive into a new synth and exploring new sounds.

If you could collaborate with anyone in the world, who would it be?

Sevdaliza. Her music is so groundbreaking and innovative, it would be a dream to work with her someday!

What are you currently working on? What can we expect from you in 2023?

I’m currently working on finishing a bunch of new original music, as well as a couple remixes coming out later in 2023. Be on the lookout for more shows, both in the US and around the world later this year, and in the next few months I’m excited to be launching a Brooklyn-based artist collective/party brand/mix series called IMPULSE CØNTROL, so stay tuned for more on that soon!
