Back on 10 July 2019, VILDA dropped his brand new single, titled “We Own The Night”. The song is quickly gaining streams along with his previous released singles, including his debut “420 AM” which has amassed 80,000 Spotify streams in just a few months.
VILDA is quickly becoming a viral DJ and as he continues to build up his career, we have no doubt he’ll be one to watch in the coming years. We managed to exclusively interview this rising Belgian DJ about his new single “We Own The Night”, his most-streamed song on Spotify which is his debut “420 AM”, as well as his upcoming music plans.
Hi VILDA, how are you today? What have you been up to recently?
Hello! I’m good thanks, well lately I’m mostly locking myself up in the studio to work on new material, so no tan lines for me this summer!
Before we start to talk about your music, we’d like to know what made you decide to release music under the name VILDA?
Creating music is my passion, and music is mostly associated to good times, you know, going out after your nine to five job, get wild, have fun, that’s what Vilda stands for: Enjoy and let yourself go.
Your latest release is “We Own The Night”, can you tell us more about this track?
It’s like a tribute to ourselves: during the day we put on a suit, for work, we play a role, but at night we can be who we want, it’s ours.
What five words would you use to describe the song?
I’ll use Summer, Chill, Party, Melodic, and Groovy.
How long did the song take to create?
When I’m working on a song I do not see the time pass, sometimes I can finish a track in a day, sometimes weeks, because I want it to be perfect, and this track is no exception! I found the melody and groove in a day and spent a week tweaking the details.
How does it differ from your previous releases?
I always try to give a “chill” and yet “dancing” groove in my tracks, but with the combination of the guitar, the melody and groovy bass, I really feel that it has a “summer” atmosphere that is the perfect transition to start your night after a few drinks at the beach watching the sunset, so I’m very happy with that.
It’s racking up streams, just like your other tracks, what’s it like seeing your songs gain traction and being listened to thousands of times?
It’s an amazing feeling! Seeing your track played all over the world in places you wouldn’t expect, that proves that music has no boundaries and connects us all together, regarding our different cultures. That is really breathtaking.
Your debut single “420 AM” is your most-streamed track on Spotify with 80,000 streams, can you tell us more about the song and why you chose it as your debut track?
In this track, I wanted to give a nice “chill” atmosphere. When a long party is coming to an end and you’re watching the city waking up, having the last one with your friends, remaking the world you know? I liked that contrast and I decided it was a good way to introduce myself to the world.
Tell us your story, how did you become a producer and what made you decide to take up a career in music?
I’m from Belgium, a country with multiple cultures and music influences. I fell in love with music when I was a kid and started producing electronic music when I discovered how you can make music with a computer and how it gave creativity no limits. Since then I never stopped playing around, learning new techniques to create new sounds. I always made music for fun, because it’s a passion, and sometimes your passion brings you so much pleasure that you tell to yourself “why not take it a step further?” and that’s what I’m working on today.
Where do you draw your inspiration from, and who do you look up to in this industry and why?
I want my music to reflect who I am: life is short, have a laugh, enjoy and dream big. So there are a lot of artists who inspire me because you can sense their personality or feelings through their music. Therefore I have a big respect for artists like Axwell, The Shapeshifters, Mark Knight, Calippo, Fabich, Arno Cost, CID, and Don Diablo, to name a few, for their unique style and how they manage their careers.
Your cover art for your tracks are all in a cartoon style. Who created the art pieces and where did the concept for that come from?
It’s a young and very talented artist called Damien who works with the label, be sure to check out his work! @damienbgs on Instagram. The idea came related to my Belgian roots, a country famous for its Beers or Chocolate but also from its history and culture of comic strips, which I’ve read a lot as a child. So it was a nice tribute and reference to that and I love the results!
We love the results too. What else can we expect from you this year?
I have a lot of tracks in the making, but one with a very talented singer is ready which you can expect after this summer. I can’t wait to share it with all of you!
We can’t wait to hear it. What’s it like to release music under the Sidekick Music label?
It’s great! They are a passionate and dedicated team who let me focus on the music and give priceless advice that makes me a better producer every day. They are also a lot of fun, so it’s always great to go back to their hometown in the South of France and have a good time together.
Where do you see yourself in the next few years and what do you hope to achieve?
I would love to see myself sharing my music with people all around the world and collaborating with artists to share our passion and explore new things. So if I can blend my passion and having a career in this industry, that would be the biggest achievement and a dream come true.
And, finally, do you have a message for your fans?
Live, dance, laugh. That’s all that matters.
