It has been announced that James Corden will host the 2016 Tony Awards, the biggest celebration of Broadway theatre.
James is an excellent choice of host, considering that he is a Tony winner himself, after winning best leading actor in a play for his performance in One Man, Two Guvnors in 2012.
James said, “I’m absolutely thrilled to be hosting the Tony Awards. Both times I’ve worked on Broadway have been amongst the happiest times of my professional life”.
“I consider it a huge honour to be asked to host such an incredible night. It’s gonna be fun, I can’t wait to dust off my tap shoes!”
James’ career has gone from strength to strength over the years. He is widely known for his role as Smithy in the sitcom Gavin and Stacey, as well as starring in The History Boys and One Man, Two Guvnors.
He has since received even more success, as the host of CBS’ The Late Late Show. His ‘Carpool Karaoke’ segment has seen some of the world’s biggest stars including Adele, One Direction and Justin Bieber, join him for a sing-a-long in the car. Who knows, perhaps some of Broadway’s biggest stars will be his next passengers!
In a statement made on the Tony website, Charlotte St. Martin, President of The Broadway League, and Heather Hitchens, President of the American Theatre Wing said, “James is one of those rare performers whose gifts translate perfectly to both the Broadway stage and the television screen, making him the ideal choice to host the Tony Awards. The last time he was at the Tonys, he went home with one. We think he’ll have even more fun as host. This is going to be one unforgettable show.”
The 70th Annual Tony Awards will air on the CBS Television Network on Sunday, June 12, 2016.
