Just in time for the cold, spooky season, German singer-songwriter Kim Petras has decided to gift us with something that will melt even the coldest of temperatures: her first mixtape ever. As if that wasn’t grande enough already, Kim decided to drop it just in time to start celebrating Halloween early.
It is, quite literally, so good it’s scary.
Titled “Turn off The Light Vol. 1”, Kim’s release encompasses an all-Halloween-themed track list. The mixtape switches between showing off almost completely instrumental tracks (e.g. the dark and mysterious opener “omen”) and the lovely pop bangers we are accustomed to. Every single track is created in the festive spirit. It incorporates clever, twisted lyrics, co-penned by Kim as well as Jesse Saint John and Sarah Hudson, over a superb, spooktacular production.
Highlights on the mixtape include her collaboration with the Mistress of the Dark herself, Elvira, on the title track “Turn Off The Light” as well as the deliciously-dark club banger “In The Next Life“. “I’m the greatest God created”, the trans performer sings over a thumping beat during this track just before a ghostly siren leads into a hook about the fact that we’ll be remembering her.
We wouldn’t have doubted that statement before but after hearing this absolutely pop-tastic mixtape, we are a hundred percent positive that Kim’s name will not be forgotten.
