MTV have unveiled the nominations for this year’s Video Music Awards (VMAs) – with Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd and Billie Eilish leading the pack!
Gaga and Ariana are the most nominated artists this year – both are for a total of nine awards, including the coveted Video of the Year award for their collaborative effort “Rain On Me”, which has also been nominated for Song of the Year, Best Collaboration and Best Pop.
The Weeknd has nabbed six nominations for the video for his hit single “Blinding Lights”, which will compete with “Rain On Me” in the Video of the Year category. The singer has been also nominated for Artist of the Year.
Billie Eilish also has six nominations – her video for “everything i wanted” is up for two awards, while the clip for “all the good girls go to hell” has been nominated three times. Meanwhile, the music video for “xanny” is up against five others in the Best Direction category.
You can expect some tough competition in the Push Best New Artist category, which sees the likes of Lewis Capaldi, Doja Cat, Roddy Ricch and more all up for the award.
The Best K-Pop award also returns this year, with nominations from BTS, EXO and Red Velvet.
MTV have also taken advantage of the multitude of media we have been treated to while many stay at home during the coronavirus pandemic, in the form of two new categories: Best Music Video From Home and Best Quarantine Performance.
Another new award introduced for this year’s ceremony is Video For Good, which highlights powerful music videos with uplifting messages and important statements.
Voting for this year’s VMAs is officially open now. You can vote once per day by visiting the VMAs website to pick your favourite videos and artists.
The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards will take place at the Barclays Center in New York on 30 August. Information about hosts and performers are yet to be announced, but there’s no doubt that this year’s show will be a bit different due to social distancing measures in place.
