On July 13, 2015, Hamilton premiered in previews. On August 6, 2016, at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, Hamilton opened on Broadway, the same theatre Lin-Manuel made his Broadway debut. In 2008, Lin-Manuel played the lead in the musical In the Heights. In addition to playing the lead, the music and lyrics for In the Heights were written by Lin-Manuel.

Lin-Manuel wrote the book, music and lyrics for Hamilton. He got idea for Hamilton while in high school. Lin-Manuel was reminded of old-school rap battles while writing a paper about the 1804 duel between Hamilton and Vice President Aaron Burr.
