British pop sensation Mae Muller has officially been announced as the UK’s act for Eurovision 2023!
Appearing on Zoe Ball’s BBC Radio 2 breakfast show this morning (March 9th), the 25-year-old revealed she will perform her track “I Wrote A Song” at the competition in May, hoping to follow the success of Sam Ryder who last year finished in second place, and topped the jury votes leaderboard.
Speaking to Zoe and Rylan Clark following the announcement, the “Better Days” singer said: “Oh my God, I have been waiting to say this for months! I am shaking – to compete in such a massive music competition is simply brilliant… it’s honestly a dream!”
Co-written by Muller along with Karen Poole (Kylie Minogue, David Guetta, Galantis) and Lewis Thompson (Anne-Marie, Little Mix, Steve Aoki), the incredibly infectious dance/pop anthem showcases the strength and full-force personality of Mae’s songwriting, as she battles through adversity to turn her pain into power!
In press release Mae says of the song: “’I Wrote A Song’ is a track I wrote after the fallout from a relationship. I was hurt and also a little angry, so I thought, where can I put this negative energy and make something positive out of it? The song is less about revenge and more about empowering yourself. While I was recording the song, I envisioned me and my girls dancing to it on a Saturday night, and that’s exactly what I want people to do! To dance, sing, let go, and feel empowered after listening.”

Adopting the same selection process as last year, the BBC has been working with a management company and record label TaP Music, to pick this years Eurovision act.
Tap Music bosses Ben Mawson and Ed Millett said in a joint statement that they “have always been fans of Mae for her voice, songs and star charisma”, and that they knew from the moment they met her “she would be an incredible ambassador for the UK at Eurovision”.
“She has the most wonderfully warm and fun personality. When we heard “I Wrote A Song”, we were really taken by its impactful message – ‘songs as a form of therapy’ (a great message for the biggest song contest in the world!)”
Born in 1997 – the same year the UK last won the Eurovision Song Contest with Katrina And The Waves’ “Love Shine A Light” – Muller started writing her own music aged 8, and signed with her manager in 2017 after being discovered singing on Instagram.
Since making her debut back in 2018 following the release of her debut single “Closer”, the North London singer/songwriter has supported Little Mix on tour, collaborated with artists Aitch and Sigala, released 3 EP’s, 18 singles, and her critically acclaimed debut album “Chapter 1”.
“I’m a huge fan of so many of the artists that have found success at Eurovision, from ABBA to Måneskin,” Muller said of her involvement in the competition. “Sam Ryder was so amazing last year and proved the UK can be back on the left-hand side of the leaderboard.”
The Eurovision Song Contest grand final will take place at the Liverpool Arena Saturday May 13th, and air live on the BBC from 8pm.
