Bay Area synth-funk-pop singer-songwriter releases his new EP, Brite Nite, via AWAL Recordings.
Talking about Brite Nite, Magsy shares, “After everything we all went through over the last two years, I wanted to put out a project everyone could dance to with their loved ones and then have a completely different one when listening alone.”
Born into a biracial family, while growing up, Magsy experienced questions of belonging and often felt isolated because he didn’t fit neatly into societal roles. At the age of 14 he began writing songs as a way to work through his emotions and make sense of his place in the world. Prior to starting his career in music, he worked in construction, where he acquired an appreciation for craft and a love for creation.
Magsy explains, “Funny enough, I think that construction has made me a better musician as I believe my two hands are just as capable as any. As an indie artist, I’m asked to fill a lot of roles when creating and releasing music. Making Tik Toks and marketing myself brought me back to the first time my father handed me a power tool while balancing on a ladder. You learn quickly that getting good at one thing will lead you to believe you can get good at another. I’m so proud to say that I’ve directed all my music videos and even convinced a few incredibly talented people to join me on this pursuit of music.”
Brite Nite demonstrates Magsy’s talent and his ability to write superb songs. Now signed exclusively with AWAL Recordings, he’s been featured in outlets such as NOTION, Lyrical Lemonade, and Earmilk.
Encompassing five tracks, the EP begins with “NOISY MIND,” a bewitching tune riding a tasty funk-pop rhythm topped by Magsy’s deluxe, evocative voice, ranging from soft, sighing tones to a delicious falsetto seething with intense energy.
“MIDNIGHT BLUE” opens on a dance-lite rhythm as shimmering synths imbue the tune with a glowing radiance. “YDK” travels on a measured pulsating rhythm topped by Magsy’s plush vocals. The contagious feel and flow of the music forms a luscious earworm.
“FAVORITE FEELING” rolls out on sparkling tones, and then flows into an alluring rhythm capped by Magsy’s animated vocals. A personal favorite, “TRUTH IS” features an irresistible pulsing rhythm, creating a creamy, undulating movement, while Magsy’s cashmere tones infuse the lyrics with tender, quixotic textures.
