Yesterday, a lawsuit was filed against Ed Sheeran, based on claims that he stole the chorus for his hit song “Photograph” from the track “Amazing”, written by Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard in 2009 and released by Matt Cardle in 2012.
The plaintiffs say that “Photograph” has “verbatim, note-for-note” similarities to “Amazing” and are seeking $20 million, statutory damages, and either an injuction or royalties. They hired Richard Busch to represent them – the same lawyer who won a case against Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams last year.
Matt Cardle was quick to distance himself from the lawsuit, taking to Twitter to explain himself. He urges everyone to read news articles closely, and states that he thinks Ed Sheeran is a genius who deserves all of his success.
