There is a new anthem that we are bound to have on repeat!
First Lady Michelle Obama has gathered Kelly Clarkson, Missy Elliott, Diane Warren, Zendaya, Janelle Monae, Lea Michele, Kelly Rowland, Jadagrace and Chloe & Halle to join forces with her for a song about female empowerment. Titled “This Is for My Girls,” it has been produced by AOL’s MAKERS, a digital platform showcasing the stories of women.
Diane Warren told Billboard that the song is like “‘We Are the World’ meets ‘Lady Marmalade’ with these strong voices and strong women. When was the last time you heard a song like this or a record that had this many amazing divas on it? I’m really proud.”
The song is now available, only on iTunes, to benefit the White House’s Let Girls Learn campaign and it is for the estimated 62 millions girls worldwide who have no access to education. All of the proceeds will go to the Peace Corps Let Girls Learn Fund because all of the featured artists have waived royalties and fees.
Warren – who had just been nominated for an Academy Award for the powerful song ‘Til It Happens To You‘, sang by Lady Gaga – revealed that this song had been in the works for quite a while until her friend and Project Runway producer Desiree Gruber told her about the project, “Desiree knew the song and always loved the song because I played it for her. It needed something. It was meant for female empowerment with its uplifting message.”
Kelly Clarkson was apparently the final singer to be added to the song. “It happened so fast — literally Kelly Clarkson was singing her part in Nashville while we were almost mastering it,” Warren reminisced. “So we dropped her vocals in. It was that crazy.”
Warren and Michelle Obama both recruited all of the involved artists for ‘This Is For My Girls‘ “I’m working on Zenaya’s record, and she’s such a great role model for young girls. These are all these people I’m working with — I’m working with Janelle Monae and Kelly Rowland. Aside from being great singers, they’re all strong women. Like Kelly Clarkson, she doesn’t take sh*t from anybody, you know? None of these girls do. And how cool is it that Missy Elliott is on it? Her rap is amazing. She wrote the rap. I left that to her. The rap is really inspired on it.”
Warren is also working on more songs with Zendaya and Janelle Monae. Not only that, she has more songs in development with big stars such as Big Sean, Lady Gaga, Nathan Sykes and many others. She already has a song that she wrote with Taylor Swift, which she hints may still come out someday: “I know [Swift] likes it, so hopefully it will see the light of day. I know she really likes the song. She didn’t want me to give it away, so hopefully that means she wants it.”
Meanwhile, you can listen to a preview of the song now. Check it out:
The lyrics are certainly beautiful and inspiring:
This is for my girls, all around the world / Stand up, hold your head up / Don’t take nothing from nobody / This is for my girls, stand up and be heard / This is for my ladies, my sisters all over / This is for my girls.
Warren also said that we “haven’t had an anthem like this in a while. I envisioned the record being with all these different women, never just one girl singing on it. With Kelly Rowland on it, it’s almost like an updated Destiny’s Child record. I think it can be a huge worldwide anthem. I hope it becomes that.”
We hope it does too because we already love it!
This Is For My Girls is now available only on iTunes.
