German-based singer-songwriter Mogli releases Aftermath, a five-track collection of songs narrating Mogli’s journey to escape a toxic relationship.
Mogli explains, “‘Aftermath’ is an inward movement. Through reflecting which parts of me didn’t have enough space in my past life I’m reflecting on my personality in general. Observing ourselves, our strengths and weaknesses is an important step in healing.”
Talking about her emotional impetus, Mogli shares, “I broke out of a toxic relationship and moved to Berlin. Consequently, I was completely on my own trying to find out who I was while battling depression. I passionately dove into touring and working which inevitably led to burnout. Writing this album became my catharsis, I was able to face my fears. Being brave enough to make yourself vulnerable heals you and brings you happiness.”
Each of the five tracks is accompanied by a music video, while all the videos form a cinematic film. All the episodes were created and scored by Mogli.
The EP begins with the title track, opening on a low, graceful piano, reflecting dark portentousness. Mogli’s evocative voice, sumptuous and oh so expressive, highlights the latent turbulence of her sensations. As the tune proceeds, glimmers of optimism enter, suffusing the music with sparkling textures and flickers of sonic light.
“Bones” rolls out on piano-driven alt-pop flavors as Mogli’s cashmere voice imbues the lyrics with echoes of wistfulness. Whereas “Ghost” mirrors starker hues, thrumming with radiant washes of sound. The syncopated rhythm gives the tune a trembling urgency.
Brimming with hints of new wave savors and luscious synth-pop, as well as weightless harmonies, the feel and mood of “The Current” infuses listeners with delicious washes of resolve, showcasing the necessity of finding the courage to “swim against the current.”
A personal favorite, “Echo” travels on alt-rock momentum awash in scrumptious tangs of alt-pop. On this track, Mogli’s nonpareil voice parades its bewitching range.
Aftermath is brilliant, displaying the passion and creativity of Mogli’s vast talent, along with her beguiling voice.
