Detroit-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Moment, aka Mike Masch, recently released his new album, IN TIME.
Speaking about IN TIME, Moment shares, “The inspiration behind this album was to show a much broader range of not just musical production and ability but myself as a person in this world. So many different emotions, feelings, and experiences mixed together to tell many handfuls of stories. I loved how this came together with a variety of my favorite genres, whether that is rap in general but also incorporating R&B, old school, electronic, classical, and jazz. The album is vital to me to tell my experiences and release the various thoughts and experiences in my mind. I believe this will inspire, motivate, and help others. I’ve always said that people have unique hobbies as a form of therapy and music creation just happens to be mine. It’s real, it’s authentic, it releases and frees. I know when others listen to it that they will understand this as I do.”
Hailing from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Moment began taking piano lessons at an early age. Later, he moved to Philadelphia, where he studied music production, and audio engineering, and started working as a DJ. He followed by running his own record label, as well as producing for other artists.
Comprising 15 tracks, IN TIME starts off with “Moment in Time,” riding a booming kick drum topped by gleaming surfaces as Moment’s melodic flow imbues the rhymes with conscious savors. A sensuous, soulful female voice gives the lyrics hints of delicious R&B.
Entry points include “The Movement,” traveling on a dark, tight trap rhythm with light, swirling tones gleaming overhead. There’s a slow, alluring motion to the tune, imbuing it with old-school hip-hop flavors.
Dripping with lush R&B textures, “Content Life” floats on a syncopated rhythm that undulates and oozes mellifluous colors. This track is smooth and enticing, gorgeously wrought. Low and slow and reverberating on a fat bassline, “ReAwakened Invasion” allows Moment to strut his rapid-fire flow and tasty rhymes.
“To Infinity Instrumental” blends hints of jazz with washes of lusciously cool leitmotifs, forming a chill, addictive tune. While “Triumphant Rebel” features atmospheric layers, a fat, rumbling bassline, and crisp percussion. Sparkling notes tremble above orchestral streams of plush surfaces.
IN TIME amalgamates a variety of stylistic traces into a hypnotic album, full of Moment’s melodic flow and potent rhythms.
