MOVIE REVIEW: The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

Not aimed at ballet lovers, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, a Disney live action fantasy adventure film is short on actual ballet. It is all about extravagant visual stimuli – ravishing 1890’s London street scenes, lavish mansion interiors, a Russian palace that is surrounded by a moat, a snow covered woods, a nightmarish amusement park and thousands of characters in gorgeous period costumes.

The movie is about this young girl, Clara, portrayed by Mackenzie Foy, who is on a quest to fetch a key for her godfather, Drosselmeyer, portrayed by Morgan Freeman. Clara follows a line that leads her to the mysterious world where she meets the Nutcracker, Captain Philip Hoffman, portrayed by Jayden Fowora-Knight, that helps her journey to fetch the key. Clara learns about her mother and how she was Queen of the Four Realms. Clara learns that one of the leaders, Mother Ginger, played by Helen Mirren, turned on everyone and is plotting to rule all realms. Clara is now on a new quest to protect the four realms from Mother Ginger’s wrath. With the help of the Nutcracker and her friends, Clara sets out on a journey to receive the key and to stop Mother Ginger once and for all.
