MTV Renews Scream For a Third Season

Nobody is safe: MTV has confirmed today that their adaptation of the Wes Craven classic Scream will return for a third season.

Details are currently few and far between, however, it’s been confirmed that season 2’s showrunners – Michael Gans and Richard Register – will depart after next week’s 2-hour Halloween special. No cast or premiere date have yet been confirmed, but the season will run for a shortened length of six episodes.

It’s as-yet unknown whether the show will continue with the existing Lakewood storyline. In an interview in August, the showrunners teased a “bigger story” which explains “why the adults can never reveal any of their secrets” about the town’s murderous past. In the Halloween special promo, the show teases the return of Brandon James – the supposed culprit behind the original murders decades ago. The cast and setting of Lakewood are fan favourites, so we’d be surprised to see the show start from scratch – it seems there are countless avenues the plot can venture further into.

For now, Scream returns for its Halloween edition on October 18, 9/8c, on MTV. For international Screamers, the episode will be available on Netflix the following day.
