Los Angeles-based electronic rock outfit Battle Tapes unveils their new single, “One Night In Burbank,” a track lifted from their forthcoming album, Texture, slated for release on May 5, 2023.
Josh Boardman shares, “I’m always looking for ways to push the boundaries of what’s expected in pop-rock music. ‘One Night in Burbank’ is a perfect example of that. It’s a song that combines the nostalgia of the ‘80s and ‘90s with a sound uniquely Battle Tapes. The lyrics may be about a night of drug use and self-destructive behavior, but the song ultimately celebrates the human experience, both the highs and the lows.”
Made up of songwriting/production duo Josh Boardman and Riley Macklin, Battle Tapes formed in 2010, followed by releasing their extended single, Sleepwalker, followed by their EP, Sweatshop Boys. In 2015, they released their debut long player, Polygon, featuring “Belgrade,” “Valkyrie,” and “Solid Gold” with Party Nails’ Elana Belle Carol.
Battle Tapes’ Form EP arrived in 2017, and featured “Last Resort & Spa,” which amassed more than nine million streams, as well as “No Good.” During 2018, the pair were ensconced in the studio working on various projects, including Childish Gambino’s “This Is America.” Macklin also mixed and recorded Awaken My Love.
The twosome’s music has been featured in movie trailers, television shows, and video games, including HBO’s Girls, Grand Theft Auto V, Mr. Robot, Fox Sports’ League of Legends Championship Trailer, gEN Lock, and Amazon’s Invincible.
“One Night In Burbank” opens on new wave flavors merged with industrial elements, like a blend of Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode with hints of dance vibrancy. Throbbing, percolating textures imbue the harmonics with contagious washes of sound as deliciously glossy vocals give the lyrics creamy-dreamy savors.
Battle Tapes has it going on! “One Night In Burbank” drips with shimmering layers atop an intoxicating rhythm – a definite earworm of a song.
