Meredith Marcum, stage name MER, is a New York City-based singer/songwriter originally from Waco, Texas. Her sound is influenced by the artists she grew up listening to like Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, and Norah Jones, but has been sculpted by the popular music of her generation to evolve into an indie folk sound similar to artists, Eloise and Dijon. MER has made waves in the local scene and has received praise for her intimate lyrics, lush harmonies, and catchy melodies underscored by complex production. Now, MER is anticipating her upcoming sophomore EP Maybe I’m the Same this September. Ahead of the release, she is welcoming her second single “About the Night.”
According to MER, “The EP explores themes of loneliness and self-perception and facing the sobering truths in your life. I wrote this whole project while I was completely alone for seven days in Monterey, California while I was struggling with feelings of inadequacy and trying to figure out who I am as an individual and where I am going in life.”
MER reveals, ‘I wrote this song after spending some time home in Texas with one of my best friends. I was dealing with insecurity and anxiety about the future and she reminded me so much of my worth and value, so this song is a thank you to her for making me feel like things will be alright!”
“About the Night” opens on a pitter-pattering rhythm topped by a low-slung acoustic guitar, followed by flowing into a dreamy, bedroom pop-flavored melody. The rhythm elevates as MER’s evocative vocals imbue the lyrics with luscious drifting timbres. Prior to the delicate outro, the harmonics take on a heavy wall of sound, giving the tune bewitching essence.
Wow! With “About the Night,” MER demonstrates not only her alluring voice but establishes herself as a superb songwriter.
