Israel-based pop singer-songwriter Sheer introduces her new single, “Ruin Your Life Mode,” a song about the emotional aftermath of a situationship.
Talking about “Ruin Your Life Mode,” Sheer shares, “We like to chase the fantasy. The song talks about a girl who fell in love with the fantasy of the man she imagined in her head. But as she walks away, she knows her worth. And knows she’s the best he’s ever gonna have.”
She adds, “I think what makes it special is that feeling when you’re in a ‘situationship’ which is apparently more known than what I had thought, you think this person is gonna be your next one but they let you down and somehow it’s harder to forget about him than a person you were with in an actual relationship.”
Sheer explains, “It was also the easiest song I’ve ever done. I think I finished writing everything in two sessions, which is extremely fast. Let’s just say that every time a relationship lets you down, you should go to the studio. You’re gonna write how you actually feel and this is exactly what happened to me. I was dating a guy and everything got really messy by the end of it which happens all the time.”
Named ‘Shir,’ which in Hebrew means “one who is a poet, a singer,” Sheer’s parents must have divined their daughter’s future. Ever since then, Sheer has been singling at every opportunity, including Shabbat dinners and performing for troops during her mandatory military service.
Sheer auditioned for the Israeli military band in the hope of fulfilling her duties as a performer. She was one of 40 accepted out of 7000 hopefuls, a process she likens to American Idol, and spent the next two years serving with the most talented musicians in the country.
In 2022, Sheer burst onto the music scene, releasing four singles, “100 Proof,” “High,” “Look But Don’t Touch,” and “Rock Bottom,” amassing hundreds of thousands of streams on Spotify, as well as more than 16,000 monthly listeners, along with burgeoning numbers on social media – over 52,000 followers on Instagram and 85,000+ followers on TikTok.
Co-written by Sheer and producer Jason Hahs, “Rock Bottom” was included on elite playlists such as EQUAL Israel, New Music Friday, and the Israel Top Hits playlist. According to Sheer, “I was actually at a very low part of my life when I wrote that song, which makes the streaming numbers that much more insane and extremely gratifying.”
Opening on soft, swirling, chiming tones, “Ruin Your Life Mode” flows into a low-slung, gliding rhythm topped by shadowy harmonic layers as Sheer’s sensuous, velvet-laced voice imbues the lyrics with evocative timbres. On the chorus, her voice escalates, delivering taut, lusciously cutting flavors.
“I’ll be plotting on your friends / Don’t even try and make amends / I’ll have 100 boyfriends / In my Ruin your life mode / Press send.”
Wow! Sheer has it going on. “Ruin Your Life Mode” ebbs and rises on bewitching sonic textures, capped by the fluid voice of Sheer.
