Singer-songwriter, guitarist, performer, and bandleader Eric Nicolas recently released his new/single music video, “Song For Sir Paul.” The song dropped on Father’s Day, which is also Paul McCartney’s birthday.
A lifelong fan of Paul McCartney, “Song For Sir Paul” is a thank-you and musical love letter to McCartney’s life work of making the world a happier and more positive place. Produced by Jack Petruzzelli, Eric Nicolas wrote the song and recorded vocal, guitar, and bass tracks at his home in Watch Hill, RI; at his studio in New York City; at The Abbatoir of Good Taste in Whitstable, Kent, England, with vocalist Penelope Nicolas, under the direction of visionary provocateur and culture guru David Barratt; and at Rob Taube’s Groove Garden in the East Village.
In addition to producing, Jack Petruzzelli contributed guitars and keyboards, along with Doug Yowell (drums), and Gary Schreiner (piano, chromatic harmonica). Justin Guip handled mixing, and Chris Muth mastered it. The video was produced and edited by Chris Walsh.
Originally from Kansas, Nicolas began playing professionally at age 14. After graduating from Brown University, he relocated to NYC, where he has been working as a performing musician, session player, and songwriter. As a sideman, he toured extensively with legendary vocalist Phoebe Snow, and pop star Taylor Dayne.
Along with founding and leading the party/dance big band One Love, Nicolas has released two solo albums and performed around the world.
“Song For Sir Paul” opens on a low-slung, yet vibrant acoustic guitar topped by Nicolas’ delicious voice, vaguely reminiscent of James Taylor. A gentle rhythm enters, followed by the harmonics taking on bright layers of pop resonance. When the tune elevates, the rhythm pulses with contagious energy as Nicolas narrates his fondness for Paul McCartney, referencing many of his famous songs.
On the chorus, which shapes a charming earworm, the tune glows with radiant harmonies, imbuing the lyrics with buoyant coloration, accompanied by Schreiner’s harmonica, braying with luscious surfaces.
With “Song For Sir Paul,” Eric Nicolas blends effervescent flavors of pop and ingenious lyrics into a wonderful homage to Paul McCartney.
