Singer-songwriter and guitarist MattO introduces the music video for his latest single, “Let It Out,” a song about how to relieve compassion fatigue.
Born and raised in Switzerland, spending his life navigating a career as a business lawyer while raising a family in Zurich, MattO is seemingly far from the world of American music. The Swiss are often stereotyped for neutrality, leading us to expect from MattO objective songs droning on about the woes and passions of other nations.
But MattO also stands inside the human experience. And to be frank, he’s achieved a degree of intimacy with the American music scene working alongside the likes of Asbury Park legend Jon Leidersdorff. So, what we end up with from MattO in his two full-length albums thus far, is the ebullient observational joy of a man living a second life.
MattO is putting the finishing touches on a third album that dissects the complexity of modern life and its juxtaposition with our primitive past.
With adult consciousness, MattO invites us to awaken our inner child’s sensitivity to the absurdity of our world; to face it with raw emotion, to share, to laugh, to bridge divides.
“Let It Out” opens on a platinum-colored guitar riding a contagious, swaying rhythm as MattO’s easy-going tenor imbues the lyrics with evocative tones. It’s a voice vaguely reminiscent of Buddy Miller, only a little higher, at once inviting and tinted with hints of country twang. Drawling, talkative electric guitar accents give the harmonics low-slung brilliance.
The video, directed by Marcello Bumbica, displays the musical gifts of percussionist Sandro de Bellis and guitarist Luca Meneghello. Between studio shots, Bumbica layers in clips placing us in an atmosphere of transience, of moving through the world and our emotions, visually representing the inner and outer journeys we traverse here on earth.
Balance and stylish, with “Let It Out,” MattO offers listeners a delicious blend of soft rock and country elements that hits the bullseye.
