Los Angeles-based songwriter Thomas Monroe, aka My Autumn Amor, recently released his new EP, Quiet Girl.
Thomas’ entry into music took place when he was five years old – his father put a microphone in his hand to sing along with the Beatles. In elementary school, he was gifted keyboards, guitars, and amplifiers, along with listening to David Bowie, T-Rex, Pixies, and King Crimson. After his freshman year in high school, Thomas left home, carrying a suitcase, guitar, and John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band.
Homeless for three years, he often sang for his supper, while frequently not eating for lengthy periods. Nowadays, he contributes to UNICEF Guardian Circle children’s fund, urging others to do the same.
Since those days of living on the streets, his music has received airplay on college and mainstream radio, under various names and bands. His “Your Life Is A Song,” featuring Yuki Noda hit number 51 on Mediabase’s chart, collecting more than 1,800 spins on Top 40 stations throughout the U.S. Three of his songs were played on KROQ Los Angeles, another on Alt 98.7, as well as airplay on 240 college stations.
His latest release was featured by KCSN’s Nic Harcourt, and on Tokyo, Japan’s INTERFM.
Comprising five tracks, highlights on Quiet Girl include the title track, opening on a low-slung guitar backed by a vibrating bassline. When the drums enter, the tune takes on a measured alt-pop rhythm with hints of alt-rock. There’s a Beatles-esque feel to the tune, emanating from Thomas’ Brit-flavored inflection.
Surging with shadowy electro-pop savors, “RSVP” rides crisp, crunching percussion topped by washes of wavering coloration, at once thick and luminous. A personal favorite, “Tempest Eye” rolls out on soft, gentle hues, followed by a shifting tempo capped by swirling colors. Thomas’ voice imbues the lyrics with delicious, evocative timbres.
The last track, “The Out,” blends light folk-rock with lysergic layers of quavering synths as Thomas’ voice infuses the lyrics with urgent timbres.
Innovative and echoing with retro aromas, Quiet Girl offers lusciously original melodies, alluring rhythms, and stylish vocals.
