It’s been over a year since the first season of 13 Reasons Why, based on the best-selling book by Jay Asher, premiered on Netflix. The series told the story of Hannah Baker, a high school junior who committed suicide and left behind 13 tapes which explained the reasons why she took her own life.
The series left fans asking many questions, and as it was so well received, it was officially renewed for a second season. Following the announcement, Netflix stated that the second season “picks up in the aftermath of Hannah Baker’s death and the start of the characters’ complicated journeys toward healing and recovery”.
Since then, fans have been searching for any information possible regarding the events of the second season. So far, we know that sexual assault will be at the centre of the series, in addition to recovery and justice. Variety also reports that Netflix will better prepare its audience for triggering/sensitive content this time round by adding a warning video where stars of the show will tell viewers how they can get help if they are affected by the show.
Whilst our favourite characters including Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette), Jessica Davis (Alisha Boe), and Tony Padilla (Christian Navarro), as well as the late Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford) will be returning, we will also be introduced to new characters this season. They include Cyrus (Bryce Cast), Mackenzie (Chelsea Alden), Sonya (Allison Miller), Nina (Samantha Logan), Chloe (Anne Winters), Jackie (Kelli O’Hara) and Rick (Ben Lawson).
Just last week, it was confirmed that season two will premiere on May 18 after Netflix dropped a dark date announcement video. The clip revealed that the cassette tapes from season one have now been replaced with polaroid pictures, which left fans asking even more questions than before.
Now, Netflix has released the official trailer for season two of 13 Reasons Why, and it’s safe to stay that we’re in for a bumpy ride. With the tagline “Hannah wasn’t the only one”, it seems that this season is going to be even more intense than the last.
The trailer shows that Clay and the rest of the students at Liberty High are still reeling from Hannah’s death, but all is not as it seems after Clay receives a disturbing message on a polaroid picture. The likes of Jessica and Justin (Brandon Flynn) are also subject to threatening messages, whilst Bryce (Justin Prentice) is seen on trial in court.
Other notable moments in the trailer include Hannah’s mum (Kate Walsh) and her fight for justice, Clay seeing visions of Hannah, Mr Porter (Derek Luke) struggling to cope, and Clay learning to shoot. According to Deadline, Netflix will also address what happened to Alex (Miles Heizer) and the choices Tyler (Devin Druid) makes in the face of his social isolation.
