International singer-songwriter Nya unveils her brand-new single, “Closer Than Close,” following on the heels of her previous single, “The Real You,” which entered the Top 20 on Mediabase’s Adult Contemporary chart and took the twenty-sixth slot on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart.
Raised in Tampa, Florida, in her interview with Variance’s Ethan Ijumba, Nya explained her genesis as a singer, sharing, “I accidentally fell into love with singing at 16. Voice lessons had initially been a means to an end to get a part in the school musical but quickly became more than that. When I sing, I swear it’s transcendent; I feel free in those precious moments. The burden of my neuroses, of the past, lifts, leaving me at my best.”
Gifted with a silky-smooth, haunting voice, Nya’s influences include Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Aretha Franklin, Amy Winehouse, and Lauryn Hill because “they make you feel.”
As her artistry evolved, Nya’s sound developed as she listened to modern artists, such as Fiona Apple and contemporary sonic architects whose music challenges easy pigeonholing. Nya’s sound merges elements of jazz, pop, alternative, R&B, and soul into bewitching sonic potions with authentic lyricism.
Produced by Grammy winner Brian Kennedy, her new love song, “Closer Than Close” opens on shimmering colors transitioning into a posh R&B-flavored tune with hints of pop and soul running through it. Nya’s crème de la crème voice imbues the lyrics with quixotic savors, ranging from cashmere melodicism to a reggae-lite rapping flow.
The delicious roll of the rhythm gives the song a beguiling, sensual motion, at once captivating and dripping with residual energy. As creamy and alluring as the music is, Nya’s luscious tones, under exquisite lilting control, infuse the song with passionate apostrophes and nuances addressed to her lover.
Nya has it going on! “Closer Than Close” sways, ripples, and glides on delicious harmonic textures, crowned by the superlative voice of Nya.
