Olivia Rodrigo is back! It has been a while since the ‘Drivers License‘ singer has released any new music, so when we realise she is back with blood sucking single ‘Vampire‘, we cannot help but listen to what the singer does next with her passionate lyrics about the experiences of being in love and the trauma of breakups.
Since the release of her debut album released in 2021, ‘Sour‘, it has been a long anticpated for the pop sensation to return with new music. Produced by and co-written with Daniel Nigro(also Rodrigo’s main creative partner on SOUR), ‘Vampire‘ takes a different turn and unlike her 5x Platinum breakthrough single ‘Drivers License‘, Olivia decided to change up her music production and create an intensity before diving into her soaring drum beats through her alternative, rock-pop sound.
Starting with delicately singing about her inner emotions reflecting on her past relationship, melancholic piano keys play with Olivia’s angelic vocals, but as the melody goes on and her pace quickens, the song increases tempo with pounding drums and magnificently frantic piano work. Within this, the 20-year-old lies out her anger and aggression within the song, explaining how her ex drowned out all her energy. Describing them as a “Bloodsucker, fame fucker/Bleedin’ me dry like a goddamn vampire.”
Speaking on the song, Olivia explains “I was upset about a certain situation and went to the studio alone and sat down at the grand piano, and the chords and melody and lyrics just poured out of me — almost like an out-of-body experience,” she recalls. “It’s a song about feeling confused and hurt, and at first I thought it was meant to be a piano ballad. But when Dan and I started working on it, we juxtaposed the lyrics with these big drums and crazy tempo changes. So now it’s like a heartbreak song you can dance to.”
The newly-released single follows on from her 2021 debut album ‘Sour‘ which claimed Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 64th GRAMMY® Awards. Now the High School Musical: The Series actress returns with a spectacular single and music video directed by Petra Collins, along with an exciting announcement on her upcoming second studio album, ‘Guts’, which will be unveiled on the 8th of September.
Why not take a bite out of the new single ‘Vampire‘ now?
