Very soon, The Color 19 will also release a new music video to accompany their single “We Became” from Waves. The video will feature Melissa Sandoval, an R&B singer and Vine star.
Earlier this week, we got to ask The Color 19 some questions, and got an insight into their new album and some of their musical influences.
Who are you, and what do you do in the band?
Spencer Hendricks – drummer, piano, backup vocals
Jack Ellis – lead vocals, guitarist
What inspired the name The Color 19?
The number 1 represents ‘new beginnings’ and the number 9 represents ‘endings’. The two of us had been making music together for years, but did so with other band members and under different band names. Once the two of us decided to form our own two-person band, we wanted a name to signify the end of a past musical era and the start of a new one and the numbers 1 and 9 (19) was the perfect way to show that. We thought the new kind of music we were creating was very ‘colorful’, so we put the two together and we got The Color 19. A very meaningful name to us that describes who we are and where we have been.
What inspired your EP, Waves?
We were moving from Cleveland, Ohio to Los Angeles and it was a big change for us. We left our family and friends and basically started our lives over. This EP was very much inspired by the changes we were going through at that time.
What’s your favorite song off of the album and why?
Spencer– My favorite song is ‘Our Town’. Although it is such a stripped down song I feel that it is the most emotional song on this EP. The lyrics are very meaningful and the story behind it definitely means the most to me.
Jack– My favorite song off the album is ‘We Became’ because its so upbeat and meaningful. That song says a lot about us and what its like to go through so much change in a small amount of time. With friends and loved ones being left behind in our move to California, it caused a lot of emotion and I think that song was a way to talk about it.
Where do you see yourselves going in the future? What are your goals for the band?
We want to impact as many lives as we can with our music and connect with people who may be going through similar events in life as us. At the same time we want to become the best musicians/songwriters we can be.
What songs or albums have you been listening to recently?
We listen to a lot of indie/pop. Recently we have been listening to Smallpools, The Japanese House, BØRNS, and Twenty One Pilots.
What artists would you like to collaborate or work with in the future?
Matty Healy and George Daniel of The 1975. The songwriting and the production in their music fascinates us.
Waves is currently available on iTunes, Spotify, and other sources of music. Be sure to check out their website, and find them on Facebook and Twitter. It’s safe to say that The Color 19 will continue to impress in the future!
