IT’S MIGHTY MORPHIN’ TIME FOR YOU TO MEET THE POWER RANGERS!
Power Rangers has been a successful and much loved pop culture franchise for the past 22 years. On March 24, a new group of teens will be bringing the Power Rangers to life, and they are ready to create a huge impact both on and off screen.
As the official movie synopsis reads, “Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.”
Dacre Montgomery, Becky G, R.J Cyler, Naomi Scott and Ludi Lin will be taking on the famous Power Ranger roles, and are hoping to impress both old and new fans of the franchise. In the run up to its release, we take a look at the five rising stars and their Ranger characters.
MEET THE RANGERS
Dacre Montgomery – The Red Ranger (Jason)
Dacre Montgomery is an Australian heartthrob, who is bound to impress as Red Ranger Jason, the leader of the Power Rangers. He is set to be a familiar on-screen face in the next few months, as he has also joined the cast of Stranger Things – let’s hope he doesn’t suffer the same fate as Barb!
The character of Jason is a high school football legend until one game causes his world to flip upside down. Struggling to find himself, Jason is given a new lease life when the opportunity arises to lead a new team of unlikely superheroes.
Becky G – The Yellow Ranger – (Trini)
Becky G first came to our attention as a YouTuber. Having uploaded her first song cover on the video sharing site in 2011, she has since grown from strength to strength, touring the US, winning numerous awards and featuring on various TV shows.
She will be taking on the role of Trini, The Yellow Ranger, who is enigmatic but extremely bright. Trini is keen to find her own group of friends, as she tends to be lonely, changing schools often as her parents constantly move for work. Along come the Power Rangers, who are set to change her world.
R.J. Cyler – The Blue Ranger – (Billy)
R.J. Cyler found fame in cult movie Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, which received its premiere at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival. Since then, he has grown in confidence, and also appears in HBO’s Vice Principals.
It’s safe to say that in real life, R.J. is the polar opposite of his Blue Ranger character Billy. In the show, Billy’s main challenge is fitting in socially. Despite being kind, quick-witted, highly intelligent and full of enthusiasm, he’s never had any real friends. When he becomes an integral part of the Power Rangers, it’s a big deal for Billy.
Naomi Scott – The Pink Ranger (Kimberly)
British actress Naomi Scott has already had a string of successful TV and film appearances, including Life Bites and The 33. Her role as Kimberly, the Pink Ranger, is set to be her biggest yet.
Sassy Kimberly once had it all, as the Queen Bee of Angel Grove High. Having suffered a fall from grace when she was deserted by the popular group, she is struggling to discover the real her. Her role in the Power Rowers allows her to develop a new rebellious attitude and without her jock boyfriend, she seems ready to tackle any new challenges that face her.
Ludi Lin – The Black Ranger – (Zack)
Last but not least, we have one of Asia’s fastest rising stars, Ludi Lin. A jack of all trades, master of many, he has a degree in Dietetics, is fluent in both Cantonese and Mandarin and is proficient in martial arts, Muay Thai AND Olympic style wrestling. Talk about a Super Ranger!
Ludi will be taking on the role of Zack, the Black Ranger who oozes confidence and cool on the outside. However, there are many layers to his character, and whilst he has a strong persona, in reality he feels deeply inferior to all his peers.
We can’t wait to see Dacre, Becky, R.J., Naomi and Ludi in action as this year’s biggest set of superheroes! As long time fans of the franchise, we’re certain that these rising stars are going to take things to the next level.
Power Rangers comes to cinemas on March 24.
