Boston-based pop artist MkX premieres his latest single, “right place, at the right time,” on CelebMix.
For the past two years, MkX has released a series of irresistible singles, beginning with his debut track “The Look,” followed by “Ghost,” “One Sided Love,” which hit number 37 on Billboard’s BDS Mainstream Top 40 chart, and took the second spot on Mediabase’s Top 40 Indie Label Report. Along with “Highlights,” his music has been featured in retail stores across the country, including H&M, Abercrombie & Fitch, Sephora, Gap, Old Navy, and Best Buy, resulting in 61,000 plays per week, as well as 3 million streams on Spotify.
When not working on his own music, MkX writes and produces for other top artists, such as co-writing with Kim Petras and producing “Young & Wild” for K-Pop’s TWICE. The song was on TWICE’s EP, YES or YES, which went platinum and topped the charts in South Korea and Japan.
MkX’s sound amalgamates electro-pop, R&B, future bass, and trap elements into tantalizing pop songs with sizzling energy and dynamics.
Explaining his electrifying sound, MkX says, “One of the reasons I love writing pop music so much is that it’s an art form with almost a science to it. It’s a very dynamic balance of maintaining catchiness and following a certain form, while making sure it stays unique and stands out from what’s already been done.”
MkX has shared the stage with Ariana Grande and Christina Perri, performing at Whisky A Go Go, The Roxy, CMJ Music Festivaal, El Rey Theatre, Mandalay Bay, Times Square, and Lincoln Center.
For MkX, music is more than self-expression, it’s a vehicle to surmount barriers and sustain his identity as an individual. According to MkX, “The ‘X’ in my name represents self-expression through art. I used to be very self-conscious of what people thought of me. It affected how I acted, wrote music, and lived my life. I decided to create a persona that embodied everything I wanted to be as a person. From auditory/visual art and fashion to attitude and confidence, I developed an identity that represented the best version of myself.”
“right place, at the right time” opens on vibrant trembling synths topped by MkX’s marvelously delicious tones. The tight and right rhythm pulses with muscular vibrations riding taut syncopated percussion and a throbbing bass line. The melody exudes flavors of cool electro-pop, trap-lite, and tasty R&B savors, as MkX delivers the lyrics with swanky aplomb.
“Undercover operation takes / A lotta discipline and patient waitin / Gotta secretly manipulate/ To speed fate up / Blockin everything my friends been sayin/ Cuz I’m closer than yesterday / Got me high off your proximity / You’re breakin me down.” And then the plush chorus: “I can’t pretend I haven’t tried / To say the right things / In the right place, at the right time.”
With “right place, at the right time,” MkX delivers galvanizing sonic textures and a stylish hefty groove, all crowned by the polished voice of MkX.
