On Tuesday afternoon the kremlin denied all allegations that a phone call took place between Vladimir Putin and Sir Elton John. Sir Elton made his feelings abundantly clear about the Russian President’s narrow minded views about the gay community.
Sir Elton accused Putin of saying: ‘stupid things’ and admitted that reaching out to Putin would be difficult and probably: ‘pie in the sky … He may laugh behind my back when he shuts the door, and call me an absolute idiot, but at least I can think I have the conscience to say I tried.’
Dimitri Peskov spokesman of the kremlin had this to say on the matter: ‘I don’t know who spoke to Elton John but President Putin did not speak to him. I don’t know [what happened] but President Putin did not speak to Elton John and most importantly we didn’t receive any proposals to meet.’
According to Peskov, Putin is always willing to discuss human rights with an activist but apparently this conversation has yet to happen.
Although Sir Elton released this statement on his Instagram with a picture of Putin: ‘Thank-you to President Vladimir Putin for reaching out and speaking via telephone with me today. I look to forward to meeting with you face-to-face to discuss LGBT equality in Russia. @president_vladimir_putin @ejaf #lgbt #lgbtrights #ShareTheLove.’ It seems that the clash between the President and singer has just gotten wider.
