Livewire Asian female producers RayRay and JVNA join forces on their new bilingual collaboration, Butterfly, a track from RayRay’s upcoming debut album, Unearthly World.
Talking about “Butterfly,” RayRay shares, “One of my favorite songs on the album. It’s definitely a unique combination between me and JVNA. I’ve wanted to work with her for a very long time. She is such an inspiring person. It’s very interesting and fun to blend her airy music sound with my hard trap elements together. We started making this song in July 2021 last year and actually came up with the vocals first. Be strong and brave, and eventually, you will be like a butterfly emerging from the cocoon. This is also the experience we have been learning as artists. Life isn’t a bed of roses, and there are a lot of obstacles. However, as long as you pull it through, you will become a beautiful butterfly. It’s also a tribute to our friends and fans in Taiwan and Asia.”
While JVNA adds, “I wrote ‘Butterfly’ with RayRay wanting to write a track that felt empowering to both of us. As female producers/DJs, we’ve bonded over our experiences of being in a male-dominated industry and the feeling of needing to prove ourselves constantly. This song is about taking a leap of faith in pursuing our dreams, becoming the person we want to become, and succeeding in our goals. When RayRay and I initially met, we clicked instantly. She is one of the few friends I have in the industry to whom I can relate and talk about the similar struggles and experiences we have in our work field.”
After being named to Beatport’s HOT 100 Future Bass/Trap Top 10 List, RayRay’s sound clicked with Yellow Claw, who signed her to the Barong Family, followed by releasing three EPs. During the pandemic, RayRay started her streaming channel on Twitch, which went on to become the top Twitch “Live Music” stream. She also appeared on Tiesto’s Musical Freedom show on Sirius XM Radio.
In 2021, RayRay released “Lasergun” with Yellow Claw, “Pump It Up” with Moksi, and “Where Are My Friends” with Sihk. She’s performed at elite festivals such as Glastonbury, ADE, Tomorrowland, Sonar, and Arcadia.
On her part, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist JVNA began classical piano training at age 6, followed by writing songs at 11. Later, JVNA attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Her imaginative interpretation of MapleStory’s “Login Theme” went viral on the internet, collecting 500,000 views in a 24-hour period.
JVNA followed by releasing “I’m With You” and “Catch Me,” resulting in a sold-out tour of the U.S. Because of the pandemic, the tour was canceled, so she focused on completing her debut studio album, Hope In Chaos, released in 2021.
“Butterfly” opens on sylph-like vocals atop shimmering colors, and then flows into a muscular trap rhythm as a sensuous voice travels overhead. The harmonics ramp up to dazzling, potent layers of sound, dripping with edgy synths and a fat, subterranean bassline. The lyrics, sung in both English and Mandarin, glide forth on the delicious, crème de la crème voices of RayRay and JVNA.
Awash in potent sonic surfaces thrumming with dramatic motion, “Butterfly” confirms the enormous talents of RayRay and JVNA.
