REVIEW: JORDY is reborn on ‘SEX WITH MYSELF’

On his third studio album, JORDY is heading to the club. And it’s impossible not to follow him onto the dancefloor.

On SEX WITH MYSELF, the pop star tracks a night out through seven songs and 17 minutes of grungy pop. The effect is his most cohesive release to date and a triumph in the face of adversity.

Album opener ‘SECOND MINUTE HOUR’ whirrs into life with the airy pop tones that have cemented the LA-based star as one to watch, but it takes JORDY just seconds to launch a curveball as he plummets into a dirty synth line. “Can’t hear a thing, so I’m just staring at your mouth,” he delivers menacingly.

A songwriter with his pulse on what’s trending, that track exists in the same space as viral Troye Sivan hit ‘Rush’ with a carnal chorus that gets dirtier and dirtier. Heart rates up, JORDY is only just getting started.

Where there’s a feeling of Sivan on ‘SECOND MINUTE HOUR’, the fizzing start of ‘CAN U HOST?’ has echoes of a Dua Lipa hit and the revs of ‘CRUISE’ are unmistakably Charli XCX influenced. The whole project is incredibly in vogue.

While it’s easy to pick out the sounds of those big names on SEX WITH MYSELF, the album remains clearly a JORDY project. The rising star has won over fans with his witty lyrics and his writing reaches new levels of cheekiness as he revels in the flirting of ‘CAN U HOST?’.

Meanwhile, on ‘CRUISE’ the singer is at his most unshackled to date and it’s impossible not to be taken by his care-free delivery. There’s a similar sentiment to ‘MEN’, which is begging to be spun in the club.

On the surface, the record is nothing more than a lustful frenzy but the star’s journey to this point helps make the project so impressive. Dropped from his label last year, JORDY struggled to come to terms with what that might mean for his future as an artist – explored candidly single ‘things change’ last November.

SEX WITH MYSELF comes in response to that low. In the dingy clubs and rendez-vous, JORDY seeks connection with a full-throttled conviction to bounce back by living life.

Last year’s heartbreak is far away from the album’s lyrical content but the feeling of an underdog’s comeback is plain to hear through the project. It’s at its most evident on ‘SEX WITH MYSELF’, which closes the record, as JORDY decides he’s better on his own – “It’s better alone, cos I know just what to do,” he winks.

It’s been a big 12 months for the singer and it’s impossible not to feel the high of his rebirth on SEX WITH MYSELF. It’s a real party.
