After nearly three years off the release radar, Rihanna is finally back—but not in the way fans had hoped. Instead of signaling the long-awaited arrival of R9, the pop superstar’s new single “Friend of Mine” arrives by way of the upcoming Smurfs movie soundtrack. That’s right—RiRi’s return comes wrapped in blue, delivering a sweet, sun-soaked track that’s more Smurf Village than stadium tour.
The song officially dropped on May 16, just two days after it first teased in the Smurfs trailer, where Rihanna’s character Smurfette (yes, she’s voicing her too) sings and dances through a candy-colored village. But Ri didn’t stop at just lending her voice, as she’s also credited as a producer on the animated feature, which hits theaters July 18. The soundtrack lineup is stacked, with contributions from Tyla, Cardi B, DJ Khaled, and DESI TRILL rounding out the pop-heavy playlist.
The latest single may not be the edgy, album-teasing banger fans have been hoping for, but “Friend of Mine” still brings a breezy, Afrobeats-tinged charm. With warm synths and gentle percussion, Rihanna’s vocals float over a sunlit groove that feels more like a bedtime bop from Smurf Village than a festival-ready hit. Still, it’s Rihanna—so people are tuning in, streaming, and spiraling.
And spiral they did. Social media, as expected, went full Ri-lapse. “She said we’d get new music and gave us a theme song for kids. Queen behavior,” one fan quipped. Another snapped, “Get in that studio, I’ve had it.” Still, underneath all the memes and mock-meltdowns, there’s a genuine excitement and joy, because a Rihanna release is rare air, and the Navy knows it.
“Friend of Mine” follows 2022’s “Lift Me Up,” her soaring ballad for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which snagged her a first-ever Oscar nod. But her last full-length album, ANTI, dates all the way back to 2016, and the wait for R9 has become the stuff of pop culture legend. In her February cover story for Harper’s Bazaar, Rihanna hinted that the wheels are finally turning on her long-awaited album. “I think music is my freedom,” she said. “I know it’s not going to be anything that anybody expects. And it’s not going to be commercial or radio digestible. It’s going to be where my artistry deserves to be right now. I feel like I’ve finally cracked it, girl!”
So while R9 remains a mystery wrapped in navy blue hope, “Friend of Mine” is proof that the mic isn’t collecting dust just yet. Until then, we’ll take what we get and happily dance it out with the Smurfs.
