Rising star Nova May is cranking up the production and throwing a house party on sizzling new single ‘TROY’.
For fans of Charli XCX, Robyn, Rihanna and all things pop, the latest single from the singer behind ‘Liar’ and ‘last xmas (you gave me cocaine)’ drops today.
CelebMix chats to Nova May all about the track.
Q: Hey Nova, thanks for chatting with CelebMix. What are you up to today?
A: Hey! Of course, thanks so much for having me. Today I’m in a session writing for another super cool artist, I love writing for other people as well as myself. After that, I’ll probably go home, prep some more ‘TROY’ TikToks and then have dinner with my best friend as he’s staying with me right now.
Q: We’re chatting ahead of the release of ‘TROY’, which will be out when people are reading this. How excited are you to have the track out in the world?
A: Omg I’m literally so, so, so excited for this one! The response from people online has been really positive and I’ve received so many amazing messages from people telling me they love the song. It literally means so much to me when I get those.
Also, I feel like it’s extra special to me because I wrote it at a time when I was going through it a bit and it really helped me feel excited about music and life again. I’ve literally listened to it so many times to lift my mood so I hope it can do the same for my fans too.
Q: The sound is making us feel a mix of Slayyyter and Rihanna vibes – which is a pretty cool mix! Which artists would you say are your biggest musical inspirations?
A: Ooo, I love that. There’s honestly so many insane artists that have inspired me but I’d say Lady Gaga is my biggest inspiration at the moment. I would literally die if I met her, ha!
I’m also so inspired by COBRAH, Charli XCX, Christina Aguilera, and Whitney Houston. Miss Christina’s vocals in Moulin Rouge shook me to my very core as a kid and the rest was history.
Q: ‘TROY’ is such a fun listen, and a bit of a dancefloor filler. What was the vibe like in the studio when you wrote it?
A: Thanks so much! I actually wrote it in rural Germany last September so not really in a party location, ha. I went there to visit my producer and best friend 444BOY to work but also because we both wanted to do some mountain hiking to get away from things for a bit. I think it really helped clear our brains and channel more positive vibes because ‘TROY’ turned out to be such a party song. We wrote it on Zoom with my Canadian writer friend Nick and the vibes were honestly immaculate. We wrote it so quickly and I was obsessed!
Q: And how about that music video… iconic! What was it like shooting that?
A: It was so fun but super stressful to organise because I’m an independent artist and don’t have any funding or label backing so it was heavily reliant on friends showing up for me! It was hard to make happen but such a vibe in the end. I’m super gassed with it and I cannot wait for people to see it. I think it turned out really sick.
Q: It’s your first release of 2024. What else can we expect from Nova May this year?
A: It is! People can expect BIG FAT VIBES all year round. I’ve got some super sick songs ready to release throughout 2024. Everyone’s gonna be gagged – I know it!
