Avril Lavigne became an important central figure in the continuance and emergence of pop punk during the early to mid 2000’s. Her raw voice combined with her songwriting skills as well as punk style (and musical style) later earned her the name “the pop punk princess”.
80 million records later and Lavigne is still making killer music! Lavigne’s journey began with one of her many signature songs entitled ‘Complicated’. It immediately earned her two Grammy nominations for Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
She also received a Grammy nomination in the category for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for ‘Sk8er Boi’, her first official pop/rock punk release. This prompted her to gain vocal comparisons to past legendary 90’s alternative rock ladies such as Alanis Morisette.
But it’s been her emotive style that’s drawn in music lovers of different kinds. One country that’s fallen madly in love with Avril is Japan, where she has received a Million certification 3 times for albums Let Go, Under My Skin, and The Best Damn Thing.
Her best selling album Let Go even has a spot on the best selling albums list of ALL TIME, having sold over 20 million globally!
Oh! We also can’t forget the legendary ‘hey hey, you you’ anthem (‘Girlfriend’) that took the world by storm and remains her best selling single. It’s also mentioned by AllMusic as “one of the most significant punk-pop songs of all time”.
Not many artists (if at all) have achieved the major longevity that Lavigne has had. It’s been more than 10 years and she continues to inspire her fans to live freely and live with the upmost positive and UPBEAT attitude.
Only 31, Avril Lavigne will continue to create great music and we’re hoping she comes out with an album soon! We love some pop punk inspired music, so bring it on!
