SDCC 2018: What We Learnt About Season One Of ‘Tell Me A Story’

If you love ‘Once Upon A Time’ and ‘Grimm’, you’re going to absolutely love ‘Tell Me A Story’. During the SDCC weekend, Kevin Williamson, James Wolk and Paul Wesley promoted their new pscychological thriller ‘Tell Me A Story’ and it sounds incredibly confusing, but we’re fascinated by it! The series will be on CBS All Access and will adapt classic fairytales to modern day, with no filters whatsoever.

Without further ado, here is what we have learnt about the series and what’s to come:

‘Tell Me A Story’ is an adaptation of a Spanish series

The brand new series is based on Spanish series ‘Cuéntame Un Cuento’, which premiered back in 2013. EP, Kevin Williamson was immediately taken by the show’s concept and took it while it was there to take.

“When I was sent this script, it reminded me of writing Scream, and of deconstructing the horror genre.”

Paul Wesley is excited to be playing a human of his own age

For the past 8 years, Paul Wesley has played the beloved 17-year-old vampire, Stefan Salvatore – although director, Kevin, joked that he was actually playing a 171-year-old. This time round, Paul Wesley will be playing a human around the same age he is in real life and he is very excited about this.

“I’m a man in my mid 30s. I was playing a 17-year-old and now I get to play a man in my 30s.”

Paul Wesley’s character is the complete opposite of Stefan Salvatore

“He has certain tattoos that will make you be like ‘I know what kind of guy this is. This guy doesn’t really think before he acts.’ He sort of get’s himself in to these positions that are just so unfortunate. He’s not stupid, but sometimes he does some really stupid things.”

Hmm… Are you SURE he’s nothing like Stefan??

The show will interweave three classic fairy tale stories in to one

Season one will focus on ‘Three Little Pigs’, ‘Little Red of Riding Hood’ and ‘Hansel and Gretel’.

The links to the classic stories will be subtle

The series will not be following the classic stories as most people know them, however, Paul Wesley has said that if you’re all familiar with the stories, you’ll know about the subtle drops immediately.

The three little pigs humanised traits

The littlest pig wants things to be easy, the middle pig is willing to go half the distance in life but wants the rest to be easy and the final pig will work hard to get everything, although that doesn’t mean things will be easy for him.

    The stories opening

The series will begin with Red (Danielle Campbell) moving to New York and meeting the ‘big bad wolf’ (James Wolk) on a dance floor whilst clubbing.

The rest of the story will follow on with grandmother trying to make a difference in her grand-daughters life and will showcase a growing bond between the two.

    Hansel and Gretel

There isn’t a lot of information on the story-line for Hansel and Gretel, however, what we do know is that it follows a pair that will find themselves running for their lives and in the process, finding themselves.

    Light and Dark

‘Tell Me A Story’ has been put under the genre ‘psychological thriller’, which means there is going to be a lot of dark moments, however, although it is on the darker side of the fairy-tale world, we have been promised many moments of laughter will also be coming our way. Being as this series has been created by Kevin, who also produced ‘The Vampire Diaries’ – if you loved the darkness and grittiness of TVD, you’re going to love this!

“We pack in so much rapid storytelling. We go a mile a minute but we slow down for the emotional moments.”

The ‘Tell Me A Story’ cast includes familiar names such as; Chris Brochu (The Vampire Diaries), Austin Butler (The Shannara Chronicles), Danielle Campbell (The Originals), Kim Cattrall (Sex and the City), Sterling Knight (17 Again), James Maslow (Big Time Rush), James Wolk (Zoo) and Paul Wesley (The Vampire Diaries).

‘Tell Me A Story’ does not yet have a release date, however, Kevin Williamson has said that the show will possibly drop on CBS All Access in October, 2018.
