Canadian superstar Shawn Mendes is back and better than ever. Over the weekend the teen sensation released two brand new singles; ‘In My Blood‘, and ‘Lost In Japan‘ both have been well received by fans but it’s the raw ‘In My Blood’ that is garnering the most attention from music insiders.
The emotive, and honest single sees Shawn Mendes opening up about his struggles with anxiety and depression with him singing the opening lines “help me, it’s like the walls are caving in, sometimes I feel like giving up” in a quavery almost tearful vocal before gaining his strength for the lyrics; “but I just can’t, It isn’t in my blood”.
It’s not the type of single you’d expect a 19-year-old to release, but it acts as a reminder to the listener that no matter how old, how successful, or how famous someone is they still go through the every day struggles we all face.
The chorus of ‘In My Blood’ has a stadium, almost anthemic feel to it with huge rock guitar riffs but it’s the stripped back verses that allow us a glimpse into the private world of Mendes, with the crooner singing; “looking through my phone again feeling anxious, afraid to be alone again, I hate this,I’m trying to find a way to chill, can’t breathe”.
I love this verse as it serves as a reminder that we are all sometimes guilty of spending too much time on social media which at times only feeds our anxiety. We all need to take a breather from these sites from time to time and remember they are meant to be a fun experience that should enhance our day to day lives not destroy them.
‘In My Blood’ is one of the most open, raw and honest tracks that Shawn has ever released, and both sonically and lyrically it highlights the growth of his music over the past few years. It’s definitely the best song he has ever released and will be a real highlight on his upcoming album.
RATING 5/5.
