Rising stars SOAP continue a busy start to 2024 with new music by turning their charismatic indie-pop sound to a cover of ABBA smash ‘SOS’.
The curveball release follows a flurry of singles so far this year with the four-piece sharing their intent to ‘break the system in some way shape or form’ by dropping new music every two weeks. So far tracks have included the fizzing ‘Get Out Of My House’ and live show favourite ‘Happy Alone’, among others.
On Friday the band, previously known as The Tyne, turned their attention to a cover of ABBA with clips of the song gathering millions of views on TikTok. “Y’all just made my favourite ABBA song even better,” one social media user added.
Others wrote ‘gimme that pop punk ABBA’ and ‘this song is on repeat’. One even went as far as to say, “I don’t know why but it’s giving Shrek soundtrack in the best way”.
It’s not the first time SOAP have reinvented a classic, with the band’s TikTok regularly featuring covers and the group dropping a clever rework of Gwen Stefani’s ‘Sweet Escape’ late last year.
The ‘SOS’ cover has gone on to rack up 100,000 streams in three days with the band thanking listeners on Instagram.
The group wrote: “We never could’ve ever dreamed these results in such a short time! Love to everyone that’s streamed the song and has been using TikToks/Reels with the audio! You’re all the best.”
