Fresh from releasing his debut single ‘Princess’ and follow up track ‘Since We’ve Begun’, singer-songwriter Sonny has unveiled his debut EP Hopeless Romance.
The five-track EP is a slick and modern offering, combining elements of indie, soul, folk and RnB. Hopeless Romance, co-written by Sonny and produced by Rum and Bug, includes ‘Princess’, and ‘Since We’ve Begun’, alongside new tracks ‘Two To Tango’, ‘Wage A War’ and ‘Jodie’. Despite being just 18 years old, Sonny has delivered an EP which is mature beyond his young years, making him one to watch in our eyes.
The EP kicks off with ‘Princess’, the tongue-in-cheek ballad which we’re already acquainted with. As his debut song, it allows Sonny to combine throwback and retro influences to create a modern sound, giving listeners the perfect introduction to what he’s all about.
Next up is ‘Wage A War’, a ballad of epic proportions which allows Sonny’s vocal range to shine. The passion is evident throughout, as he puts on a truly heartfelt performance.
The third EP track is ‘Two To Tango’, which showcases a different side to Sonny. The track has an old school rock sound, which is still in keeping with his soulful style. ‘Two To Tango’ is charming, and once again showcases what the singer-songwriter is capable of.
Sonny’s second single ‘Since We’ve Begun’ is next, which fuses together elements of RnB, soul and indie. The poignant ballad was inspired by his real life experiences, a key theme throughout the entire EP.
Finally, there’s the upbeat country-influenced ‘Jodie’, which rounds off the EP in a incredible manner. The use of additional vocals, particularly towards the end, is really effective and brings the song (and EP) to a superb end.
Speaking about the EP, Sonny said: “I’m really proud about how this EP turned out, especially as each song is personal to me and my life. I wanted to write a collection of songs that explored the highs and the lows of young love.”
Sonny has already garnered incredible support from numerous outlets for his solo music, including from BBC Introducing. We’re not surprised, as his unique blend of soul is irresistible and charming. He will continue to support his debut EP with live performances throughout the year, including festival slots.
