Royal Mail have announced plans to issue a set of stamps celebrating the mighty Spice Girls – aka one of the world’s most successful pop groups of all time!
Released to commemorate the bands 30th anniversary, the 15-set collection marks the first time Royal Mail has dedicated an entire stamp collection to a female pop act.
The 10 main stamps feature images from some of the girls most iconic performances, including their headline grabbing turn the Brit Awards in 1997, as well as their show stopping appearance at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
All members of the group – made up of Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell-Horner, Melanie Chisholm and Melanie Brown – have their own stamp dedicated to a glitzy picture of them, while the remaining five images are group shots from international performances such as Instanbul in 1997 and San Jose in 2007 – appreciating their global reach.
A further five stamps, presented in a miniature sheet, contain individual images of the Baby, Sporty, Scary, Ginger and Posh from the 1997 Spice World photoshoot.
Royal Mail said it worked closely with the band to choose the images.
The Spice Girls become only the sixth music group to feature in a dedicated stamp issue, following on from The Beatles in 2007, Pink Floyd in 2016, Queen in 2020, The Rolling Stones in 2022 and Iron Maiden in 2023.
In a joint statement the five ladies said they never could have dreamed of that happening when they first formed, saying: “We are so excited to be celebrated by Royal Mail, alongside some of the most iconic and influential music legends.”
“When we formed the Spice Girls we couldn’t have dreamt that 30 years later we would be the first female group to be dedicated an entire stamp collection, that’s Girl Power!”
David Gold, Royal Mail director of external affairs and policy said: “The Spice Girls have been a force to be reckoned with since they formed as a group in 1994. We are proud to celebrate the most successful female music group ever seen, not only for their music but their enduring influence over so many aspects of our lives.”
Originally formed in 1994, the Spice Girls conquered the world and defined an entire era in pop culture following the release of their debut single ‘Wannabe’ in 1996.
In total they scored an incredible 9 no.1 singles in the UK – with hits including ‘Say You’ll Be There’, ‘2 Become 1’, ‘Who Do You Think You Are’, ‘Too Much’, ‘Viva Forever’, ‘Holler’, and ‘Goodbye’ – and sold more than 100 million records worldwide.
After four years together, the girls went on a break in 2000 to pursue solo projects of varying degrees, before reuniting in 2007 for a massively successful world tour.
In 2012 the group performed a medley of ‘Wannabe’ and ‘Spice Up Your Life’ at the closing ceremony of London’s 2012 Olympic Games.
Their second reunion tour took place in 2019.
