Whenever you think of the Spice Girls, two words that automatically come to mind are ‘Girl Power’. The girlband are the definition of female empowerment and during the course of their incredible career, they have fought to represent equality for all, whilst encouraging girls and women globally to embrace their individuality and stand up for they believe in.
Following their recent comeback announcement as a four-piece and the sensational demand for their 2019 UK stadium tour, which saw extra dates being added after many shows sold out in minutes, Spice Girls have announced a new project which sees them use their Girl Power to support an incredible cause.
During their appearance on last night’s The Jonathan Ross Show, Emma, Melanie C, Mel B and Geri announced that they have teamed up with Comic Relief to launch an exclusive t-shirt campaign which will raise funds and awareness for Power Up, a programme within the charity’s Gender Justice pillar.
The #IWANNABEASPICEGIRL t-shirt is available to purchase now for £19.26. Hoodies and sweatshirts with the logo are also available, with 100% of the proceeds from the range going towards supporting charities under Comic Relief’s Gender Justice initiative.
The Gender Justice programme champions equality for women and girls. Whilst progress has been made over the years, women and girls are still at a disadvantage in the community. Some of the issues that the programme aims to tackle include pay gap, domestic violence, lack of women in leadership roles, sector funding, gender and racial equality, healthier relationships, and using sport to empower women.
Speaking about the campaign, Spice Girls said: “Equality and the movement of people power has always been at the heart of the band. It is about equality for all, ’every boy and every girl’. We recently found out that charities focused on issues faced by women don’t get the funding that they desperately need, so launching a campaign to raise funds for these issues is incredibly important to us and an area we want to support.”
Liz Warner, Chief Executive of Comic Relief, added: “Girl Power is a shared passion. Right now, this movement for equality is uniting the world in the most spectacular way and this very generous gift is going to help us support even more organisations fighting for the rights of women and girls here in the UK. We are proud to be the ones to take this forward with the Spice Girls and look forward to seeing the difference we can make together.”
The #IWANNABEASPICEGIRL range is only available for three weeks, so you need to be quick if you want to get your hands on an item from the collection. Click here to purchase.
