The Sugababes have played arenas, festivals, and television studios – but their latest gig took place somewhere few artists have ever performed: 35,000 feet above the Atlantic.

The iconic British trio – Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan, and Siobhán Donaghy – took to the skies earlier this week for a special live performance aboard a Virgin Atlantic Airbus A350, delivering a set from the airline’s Upper Class social space, The Loft. The one-off event was streamed live to audiences around the world using Starlink’s satellite-powered in-flight Wi-Fi, allowing fans to watch in real time from the ground.

Performing fan favourites including ‘Push the Button’, ‘Too Lost in You’,and ‘About You Now’, the group transformed the aircraft cabin into an airborne concert venue. The performance also featured an onboard Q&A session, with viewers submitting questions and song requests through the livestream as the flight cruised above the clouds.

The event served as a showcase for Virgin Atlantic’s rollout of Starlink connectivity across its fleet. Powered by thousands of low-Earth-orbit satellites, the system delivers high-speed, low-latency internet in flight, enabling passengers to stream content, browse the web, shop online, game, work remotely, and stay connected across multiple devices from gate to gate.

For the airline, the Sugababes performance was designed to demonstrate how next-generation connectivity is reshaping the in-flight experience. What would once have been impossible – broadcasting a live concert from a commercial aircraft to a global audience – became a reality through Starlink’s satellite network.

Virgin Atlantic has begun installing the service on its Airbus A350 aircraft, with plans to extend connectivity across its Boeing 787 and Airbus A330neo fleets. The airline expects the rollout to continue through 2027, ultimately bringing fleet-wide connectivity to passengers traveling across routes including North America, the Caribbean, Nigeria, and the Maldives.

While airlines have long promised to keep passengers connected in the air, Virgin Atlantic’s latest stunt offered a glimpse of what that future might look like: a world where livestreaming a concert from 35,000 feet feels as seamless as doing it from a stage on the ground.

For one night at least, the Sugababes proved that pop music can still reach new heights.

Commenting on the unique event Juha Jaervinen, Chief Customer Officer at Virgin Atlantic, said:  “This isn’t just about introducing Wi-Fi, it’s about showing what it can do. By livestreaming a performance from 35,000ft, we’re demonstrating the power of Starlink to deliver a seamless, high-quality connection in the air, just as our customers expect on the ground.”

“Sugababes are an iconic part of British culture, bringing generations together through their music, so they’re the perfect partners for a moment like this, connecting people in the air and on the ground in real time. As we roll out Starlink Wi-Fi across our fleet, this is just the beginning of a more connected, more flexible onboard experience.”

With the ‘Babes themselves adding: “We always said the sky was the limit – turns out, it’s just the beginning! Taking live music to the skies and turning an airplane into a global stage is unlike anything we’ve ever done. The idea that fans around the world can experience it with us in real time makes it even more surreal. We can’t wait to make history at 35,000 feet. See you above the clouds.”
