Not one to shy away from feelings, TAYLR stuns us with the amazing heartfelt self-reflection single, “The Blue”. The track serves as a reminder of a past relationship and the aversion that they went through at the time. This acts as the follow-up to “The Trees (live in studio)”.
TAYLR, a self-taught musician and singer-songwriter based in Moh’kins’tsis (Calgary, Alberta), is a captivating artist with the control and skill of a trained vocalist, yet retains the warmth and fun-loving nature of their inner child. Drawing inspiration from a diverse range of genres including R&B, jazz, folk, and indie pop, TAYLR masterfully weaves these elements together to create a melodic tapestry that exudes earnestness and authenticity. Recognised as the “thinking person’s songwriter” by Jamspere Magazine, TAYLR’s music is born from deep introspection and bold self-expression. Their vocals, characterized by strength, softness, and a lustrous quality akin to silk, have the power to soothe like a lozenge on a burning throat. Alongside their solo career, TAYLR has collaborated with esteemed artists such as Ellen Doty, Kate Stevens, and Hayden McHugh, while also founding the projects KODAE, Dear Friend, and Layla June. With a passion for meaningful connections and creating profound musical experiences, TAYLR has shared stages with renowned acts and continues to forge lasting friendships within the industry. Whether performing an intimate acoustic set or captivating a festival audience, TAYLR’s commitment to authenticity shines through every note and lyric, embodying the essence of their music—connection and love.
Written by TAYLR, themselves, “The Blue” twists jazz with indie pop while there are noticeable folk and R&B tendencies, creating an intricate and artistic piece that allows TAYLR to convey their narrative. With a driving acoustic guitar, subtle drum beats, and a gorgeous tone to their voice, TAYLR takes the listener into a world of blue cabinets and sidestepped issues through their incredibly crafted lyrics. As the story progresses, so does the song, and we realise that TAYLR has decided that they need to find themselves again, to find their way back home. “The Blue” is a completely chilled song that showcases TAYLR in such a brilliant light, making this undeniably impactful.
Talking about the break-up of the relationship that inspired this track, TAYLR said: “The two of us knew things needed to change and work needed to be done on ourselves and what we had built, but we made a silent agreement to put the blinders on and focus all of that energy into renovating our home. I wanted the song title to be the exact shade of blue that we painted our kitchen cupboards during this escapade but it felt too niche.”
