Sorkin’s adaptation of “To Kill a Mockingbird”, originally produced on Broadway, premiered in 2018 at the Shubert Theatre in New York. It went on to receive nine Tony Award nominations, winning Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role. The production opened in London’s West End in 2022 at the Gielgud Theatre, where it completed a successful run through 2023.
The play is based on Harper Lee’s 1960 novel, set in 1930s Depression-era Alabama, and follows lawyer Atticus Finch as he defends Tom Robinson, a Black man falsely accused of assaulting a white woman. Finch, who encourages kindness and empathy in his children Scout and Jem, is pushed to the limits of these qualities himself during his defense, and sets out to uncover the truth in a town that seems determined to hide it. The story explores themes of racial injustice, childhood innocence, and moral integrity. The novel has sold more than 45 million copies worldwide, and was adapted for a 1962 Academy Award-winning Hollywood film.
The creative team behind the production brings together a number of established theatre figures. Bartlett Sher, who previously directed “The King and I”, “South Pacific”, and “My Fair Lady”, returns to helm the tour. Set design is by Miriam Buether, with costumes by Academy Award-winner Ann Roth, lighting by Jennifer Tipton, and sound design by Tony Award-winner Scott Lehrer.
The production also features an original score composed by Adam Guettel and musical supervision by Kimberley Grigsby. Louisa Muller joins as associate director, alongside Ed Pierce as design supervisor. Casting is by Serena Hill CDG, with Campbell Young Associates responsible for hair and wigs. Laurence Belcher serves as resident director, and Tavia Jefferson is the tour’s cultural coordinator.
The tour is produced by Jonathan Church Theatre Productions, in association with Karl Sydow and Tulchin Bartner, and is based on the original Broadway production.
Tickets for the Glasgow run and other venues are expected to go on sale via each theatre’s box office.
