It’s been out for a little over a week, now, and it still gets stuck in our heads as much as it did the first time we heard it, “Falling To Pieces” the new single by The Pigeon Detectives is undeniably one of their best tracks ever. Catchy and unforgettable, this is one of those songs that will gain traction in the next few weeks or months. This marks the follow-up to “Lovers Come and Lovers Go“.
The Pigeon Detectives are a British five-piece indie-rock band from Rothwell, Leeds, consisting of Matt Bowman, Oliver Main, Ryan Wilson, Dave Best, and Jimmi Naylor. They’re well-known in the indie music world for the past decade or so, having dropped their debut studio album, “Wait For Me”, way back in 2007. The album gained critical acclaim and charted at number three on the Official UK Albums Chart, as well as number 54 on the Dutch Albums Chart, and their sophomore album, “Emergency”, followed in its footsteps, charting at number five in the UK and hitting charts in Ireland and France. The singles that were dropped from the albums also charted well in the UK, with “I’m Not Sorry”, “Take Her Back”, “Romantic Type”, and “This Is An Emergency”, all becoming top 20 hits for the band. Their third, fourth, and fifth albums made an impact on the indie rock/pop scene but didn’t make the commercial success as their first two; regardless, the five-piece worked the circuit, with successful tours in the UK and Europe and going on to make their debut performance on the main stage of Reading and Leeds festivals in 2011. As a ’00s commercial indie band, The Pigeon Detectives have proven to be a force in the streaming music world, with millions upon millions of streams on Spotify where “Take Her Back” has become their most-streamed track at 26.5 million streams, whilst “I Found Out” is just behind at 25.6 million streams, on the platform.
Talking about the track, The Pigeon Detectives said: “Sometimes a song writes itself, the good ones, the really really good ones always do and they just come easy because you know you’re onto something special straight away…file ‘Falling To Pieces’ into that category. We wrote this one to play live, we wrote this one to kick off the mosh pits at a festival and to raise the roof of every venue when we take it on tour. Lyrically it’s about admitting that things in life aren’t always great, that sometimes the things that are going wrong are probably your own fault, but if you hang on in there the bad times will pass and it always gets better. This is a really fun song to play as a band and we think you’re going to love it.”

Written by Matthew Bowman and Oliver Main, whilst it has been produced by Rich Turvey, “Falling To Pieces” is an addictive indie-rock track that shows off Matt Bowman’s incredible rock vocals showcasing exactly why they’re one of the front-runners in the genre. With a driving beat from the get-go, “Falling To Pieces” has an infectious quality about it as a whole as the pulsing melody, the addicting hooks, and the heartfelt atmospheric vibes all come together to create one of the best indie-rock songs we’ve heard in years. Not one to disappoint, Matt Bowman’s voice is deep with emotion, touching nerves inside every listener, and making us relate to the empowering lyrics. Uplifting every single listener, it’s hard to deny that The Pigeon Detectives really do have an unforgettable indie-rock anthem in “Falling To Pieces”, with an edge like no other.
As for the music video, we watch the band perform the song live on stage – full of adrenaline energy, but we’re not the only ones. We see Matt Bowman watching the live performance on a small TV inside a shipping container, and he seems to be signing VHS video tapes. As the visual progresses, we watch him lose his temper and he starts throwing the videotapes around the container room clearly upset with where his life is – could this be a metaphor for all the rock bands that reach a peak success and then break up and life goes downhill for them? We know this story all too well, and now we’re seeing it right there, in reality, and in theory, The Pigeon Detectives could’ve given up and stopped making music and this could’ve been true to them in some way or another, but instead, they carried on working hard and making music, and it totally worked out for them – just like how this song suggests that the difficult times will pass.
