There is a very famous quote by Winston Churchill,
We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.
When The Tragically Hip came to perform their last show in Kingston on Saturday, the atmosphere was bittersweet. The moment was both sweet and painful as it was the last show by Gord Downie and the band.
The band’s lead singer Gord Downie announced his illness in May. Unfortunately, the singer is suffering from terminal cancer. But despite the illness, he made sure he end the show with a bang. He has established himself as a legend and according to Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, he is the “unofficial poet laureate” of the country. We couldn’t agree more!
If we go by Winston Churchill’s quote, then, the band has given a lot to the people of Canada. Known as the “most Canadian band ever”, The Tragically Hip started as a college group but went on to become one of the most successful band in the country.
Their lyrics refer to Canadian life, the possible reason why the band’s 14 albums have seen the success only within the country. But Canada did get a band they could call its own and the one they could cherish forever.
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was present at the live show. He participated in writing message on the wall along with other fans and later shared his feeling on Twitter.
“The whole country is here in Kingston tonight! To say thanks, to say goodbye, to celebrate Canada's band." pic.twitter.com/agKgKkby5C

He shared his sentiments in a couple of tweets where he said, that,
On behalf of Canadians, I thank Gord Downie and the Hip for their decades of service to Canadian music. Forever in our hearts and playlists.

Also, he shared his pic with Gord with a hashtag #courage.
Thank you, Gord. #courage pic.twitter.com/kpLKVzfY63

This sweet gesture by Canada’s PM was well appreciated but it was the night for Gord Downie and his courage and performance stole people’s heart.
The show was sold out within few minutes and according to BBC, the concert “was shown at hundreds of public screenings across the country in bars and outdoor venues.”
Farewell The Tragically Hip. What would you like to say to the band? Tell us @CelebMix .
