Netflix’s hit show Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has been renewed for a third season!
The renewal was announced at the beginning of the show’s panel at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour on Sunday. The critically acclaimed show, which is produced by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, premiered on Netflix in March last year.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was originally produced for NBC, who later sold it to Netflix where it became a huge success. The show was even called “the first great sitcom of the streaming era”, by The Week. The first season received seven primetime Emmy nominations, and the lead actress, Ellie Kemper, is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series at the upcoming Screen Actors Guild awards.
The first season started off with Kimmy Schmidt being rescued after being held captive underground for 15 years. She moves to New York and tries to live a normal life without being seen as a victim. The viewers get to watch as Kimmy Schmidt struggles to adapt in a world that is much different to the one she knew 15 years ago. There is not long between the jokes that will guarantee a good laugh for everybody.
The first season showed Kimmy deal with her issues in a positive manner. During their panel at the TCA’s press tour, Ellie Kemper said that Kimmy “grapples with some pretty heavy life stuff in this season.” Kemper also revealed that the relationship between Kimmy and her boss Jacqueline Voorhees will change. She said “The employer-employee relationship is sort of muddied a little bit because these two are friends. Their dynamic changes a little bit.”
During the panel, co-creator Tina Fey also announced that she will return as the prosecutor Marcia.
The second season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is available for streaming on Netflix on April 15.
