It’s been a seven-year wait for V V Brown to make a return to music and gosh has it been worth the wait, what with the incredible new single and lyric video, titled “Black British”. There are times in the world when you have to step away, look out for yourself, and to focus on your mental health, and that’s exactly what V V Brown has been up to, but now she’s back and she’s making a huge statement in the process. This follows her 2015 album release, titled “Glitch”.
V V Brown, real name Vanessa Brown, is an indie-pop singer-songwriter, artist, activist, journalist, teacher, author, model, record producer, and mother. V V Brown really has done it all and more, her consistent hard work and determination have led to a variety of successes. The last seven years have seen her take a break from music as a whole, allowing her to focus on her mental health and on being a mother. During her time away, she created a children’s book, titled “Lily and the Magic Comb”, which she went on to publish in 2020 through her own publishing house, Woke Kids Publishing. On the music side of things, she dropped her debut album, “Travelling Like the Light”, in 2009 which went on to chart at number 30 on the UK Albums chart, as well as number 1 and 16 on France’s digital and physical albums’ charts respectively, and even landed inside the US Billboard Top 200 albums. The album’s third single, “Shark in the Water” became a huge success for her, charting inside the UK Top 40, hitting number 13 in France, and hit number 67 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Since then, she parted ways with Island Records and released her sophomore album, “Samson & Delilah”, independently, after her initial sophomore album, “Lollipops & Politics”, got shelved. In 2015, she turned to PledgeMusic where fans were able to partially fund her new album, “Glitch”, which she released in September 2015. After a solid break of seven and a half years, V V Brown is back with a brilliant new project – “Black British” being the first single of this new era, and we are totally here for it!

This new era will see V V Brown explore what it means to be Black British and why it’s so important. Making this impact and going on this open journey should help to open the conversation much more. Written and produced by V V Brown and J Sensible, the lyrics of the song completely speak for themselves and truly confront the issues that Black Britons are facing on a daily basis, right here in the UK. Yet, that’s not all, V V Brown uses her voice for good, adding a tonne of positivity within the lyrics, giving her listeners strength and power – something that others attempt to take away from Black British people. Her incredible artistic lyrics flow effortlessly around her fierce vocals and the stripped-back rhythmic track. V V Brown isn’t holding back, and “Black British” is just the start of her bold and fearless journey back into the music industry.
Talking about her return to music, V V Brown said: “The last six years have been a difficult mental health journey for me, but I came to the realisation that I need music to feel alive. Now that I live in the countryside, it feels liberating to create without that industry pressure. I spend most of my days wearing wellies, making music or enjoying the routine of family life. Everything about this album, whether it be the artwork, the lyrics, the production or the visuals, is about starting sociological conversations. Art should make you feel, whether that’s feeling uncomfortable, empowered, happy, sad, scared, inspired. There is a radical power in the role of the provocateur and this was one of the motives for this record”
