Sabrina Carpenter has officially entered the race for 2025’s song of the summer with the release of her latest single, “Manchild.” Dropped Thursday evening across digital platforms, the track doubles down on the wry, tongue-in-cheek tone she’s recently become known for, taking sharp aim at immature men with a sound that blends retro synth-pop with modern pop sarcasm.
Co-written with Amy Allen and Jack Antonoff, who also co-produced the track, “Manchild” follows closely in the thematic footsteps of Carpenter’s chart-topping single “Please Please Please.” With cutting lyrics like “Fuck my life, won’t you let an innocent woman be? / Never heard of self-care / Half your brain just ain’t there,” and “Oh, I like my boys playin’ hard to get / And I like my men all incompetent,” the song plays as a biting yet playful commentary on romantic misadventures, capturing the chaos of young adulthood with humor and bite.

The song’s music video premiered Friday morning and leans into surrealist satire. In the video, Carpenter hitchhikes across a desert landscape, encountering one absurd male caricature after another—ranging from a man riding a jet ski on land to another washing his face with gasoline. The visuals mirror the track’s lyrical message: a winding road of frustrating relationships that somehow still feels like a joyride.
Its release comes on the heels of Short n’ Sweet and continues the momentum of her breakout year. In a statement on Instagram, she called the song “an embodiment of a loving eye roll” and a soundtrack to the “confusing and fun young adult years of life.”
Though unconfirmed, speculation has swirled about whether the track draws inspiration from her former relationship with actor Barry Keoghan. The lyrics don’t mention anyone by name, but fans quickly connected the dots—especially after Carpenter teased the single with a not-so-subtle caption: “This one’s about you!!”
Carpenter and Keoghan went public in early 2024 but reportedly parted ways by December. Since then, the singer has stayed focused on her career, with “Manchild” marking her second major single in recent months. As with her viral hit “Espresso,” she debuted the new track live at Primavera Sound in Barcelona.
Whether or not “Manchild” ends up topping charts, it’s another sharp, strategic entry in Carpenter’s growing pop repertoire—balancing sarcasm, self-awareness, and undeniable summer appeal.
