Rihanna’s long-awaited ninth album, nicknamed “R9” by fans, still hasn’t come out despite the singer once teasing it would arrive by the end of 2019. After pushing back her project’s release date multiple times, fans are wondering if Rihanna will drop “R9” in 2021. Here’s what you need to know.
It’s been more than four years since the singer released an album. Her eighth studio project, Anti, which included singles like “Work” in collaboration with Drake, “Love On The Brain,” and “Kiss It Better” dropped on January 29, 2016. Since then, fans have been desperately waiting for another record.
Although new rumours surrounding “R9” spread every year, nothing has been concrete. For example, while ringing in the new year in 2021, Rihanna posted a cryptic message that had fans thinking she was teasing “R9” once again. “new year’s resolution: apply the pressure,” she captioned a Jan. 2 Instagram. Of course, this sent her followers in a frenzy, including one who wrote back, “Resolution should be releasing the album.”
Since fans have been asking for her updates on new music for years, Rihanna replied, “This comment is sooo 2019, grow up.” Later on, she sent a second response that read “2021 energy.”
The 33-year-old Barbados-born artist has been tickling her fans for a few years now, sharing in 2020 on her Instagram that she “worked hard” on new music, before timidly revealing that her fans would see the result “soon”.
