April 18th 2024: Beloved British entertainer Will Young makes his long-awaited return to planet pop today with the release of his brand new single ‘Falling Deep’.
Written and produced by PhD (Kylie Minogue), along with GRAMMY Award winning songwriter David Brook (OneRepublic, Galantis) and Fraser Churchill (Charlie Puth), the electrifying song sees the ‘Leave Right Now’ singer successfully fuse elements of 80s pop with modern day soul, to produce a progressive yet nostalgic sounding track that sits somewhere between The Police and The Weeknd.
Inspired by the sweet surrender of giving into a new experience, however “dangerous or out of control it makes you feel”, Young says of the single via a press release: “I’m remembering my roots of pop and completely welcoming it. The song immediately made my mind go to the late 70s and early 80s. I wanted the fun and nostalgia of that time but to modernise it, and I’m so proud of the result.”
Serving as the lead track to be released from his forthcoming 9th studio album, ‘Light It Up’ – which is scheduled to drop via BMG Friday, August 9th 2024 – the singles accompanying music video directed by Samuel Douek (Anne-Marie, Tom Walker, Mabel) is set to premiere at midday today!
Described as being a ‘vibrant video clip’, with nods to classic, musicals like A Chorus Line, the piece will feature an ensemble of dancers, all around Will’s age.
“I wanted to work with dancers my age as I think sometimes there can be such a focus on youth in the dance world for all performers, and older performers come with such grace and wisdom,” Young says of the video. “It was a fantastic day working with people my age. We all knew what a Nintendo Gameboy was and I think especially women can be overlooked as they age, so it felt very important to work with men and women for the project”.
To celebrate the release of his first album of original material in five years, Will Young will embark upon his most intimate tour yet this autumn.
Billed as being an “up close and personal evening of acoustic performances, stories and conversation”, the 50-date UK jaunt will kick off in September, and run through to November.
About the tour, the two-time BRIT Award winner says: “I’m very excited to be going to a lot of places I haven’t been. I wanted to go to smaller venues so I could properly get around the country rather than just playing the big cities.”
Tickets for all dates go on general sale Friday, April 26th.
Serving as the follow up to 2021’s ‘Crying on the Bathroom Floor’, ‘Light It Up’ sees the acclaimed singer-songwriter reunite with Andy Cato of Groove Armada, and long-term writing partners Jim and Mima Elliot.
Speaking ahead of the records release, Will says of the 10-track collection: “I think for me it was about finally feeling more content and being able to go back to embracing joyous unashamed pop music. I really hope this is the go-to pop album for a dance, for a cry and for a celebration. I know I do all three with it.”
