Yesterday at Vidcon, YouTube announced a new batch of YouTube Red Original series. YouTube Red is a subscription based service that offers special features of YouTube, such as no ads and watching offline. It also provides exclusive, higher production value content from your favourite creators. It is currently only in US, but is coming to UK later this year. Don’t worry about missing out on exclusive content though! Whatever country you live in, you will be able to purchase these shows individually through YouTube and Google Play.
Some successful shows and series have already premiered on YouTube Red, such as “Scare Pewdiepie”, Joey Graceffa’s “Esacpe the Night”, and Lilly Singh’s “A Trip to Unicorn Island”. Now YouTube has announced the creators that will be in the next slate of shows on YouTube Red. Let’s look at some of the highlights!
Dan and Phil Tour Documentary
One of the most exciting announcements of the batch, Dan and Phil will be releasing two YouTube Red exclusive shows. The first is a filmed version of their show, The Amazing Tour is not on Fire, intended for those who couldn’t make it to a live show. The next one is a behind-the-scenes “making of” for the tour, one that Dan said may share aspects to A Trip to Unicorn Island. Dan and Phil are the first UK youtubers to have their content featured on YouTube Red, and the release of these shows later in the year will celebrate the start of YouTube Red in the UK.
“Vlogumentary”
Produced by ShayCarl of the Shaytards and Morgan Spurlock, this series will take a deeper look into the lives and careers of YouTube’s biggest content creators. The show will focus on how they use their digital platform creatively and to voice their ideas and opinions, and how this format could change the way media is used. It has already been a few years in the making, so we’re excited to finally see the product of all this hard work!
Step Up
Following the news of Dwayne Johnson joining YouTube, we have another celebrity turning to YouTube for their latest project- Channing Tatum! Along with Jenna Tatum and the original producers of the Step Up films, he will produce a new spinoff of the original movies. This series focuses on the lives and drama of dancers at a contemporary dance school, and is described as “heart pounding, sexy, and music filled”. There will be 10 episodes which will be 45 minutes long.
These aren’t the only new shows on YouTube Red! Dynamic YouTube duo Rhett & Link will be unveiling a new scripted comedy series. Vsauce is making an educational series about human nature, and VanossGaming will be releasing an animated comedy series! Also look out for a documentary starring Gigi Gorgeous, Wong Fu Productions’ new movie “Single By Thirty” and a feature length comedy film from Smosh! YouTube is also renewing previous shows “Scare Pewdiepie” and “Foursome” for second seasons.
