Nothing’s more terrifying than realizing the year is almost over and you’ve done too few things. Whenever it feels like you’ve finally gained some free time, more things pile on! It’s a true nightmare.
But with the wave of the holiday season approaching — those tremendous few days where it feels like everyone is collectively doing nothing — it seems we’ve finally managed to find some free time. And what better way to spend that time than by watching some great films?
2017 was jam-packed with incredible films — from plotlines that left us breathless, to magnificently-shot films that left us in shock. Many of these films will, hopefully, be sweeping award season early next year (with many of them having already dominated the film festival awards). The ensembles, music, actors and scenery will leave you dreamy-eyed and maybe even a little heartbroken.
So here are 12 films, released in 2017, that you must watch in your lifetime.
Lady Bird
Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut is one of the most noteworthy of the year. Saoirse Ronan is a performer that leaves the audience captivated by her ability to become anyone she wants. The entire ensemble of this film manages to make this remarkable.
The film takes on such a down-to-earth tone — the story is unique, yet it captures normalcy so well. Everything about this film — the cast, the story, the emotions — is superb and we cannot express our love for it enough.
Get Out
Jordan Peele is one the greatest minds in cinema — nothing can change our minds about that. Get Out, a film that no one was expecting, became one of the most raved about films of the year and we cannot help but agree.
Get Out has managed to become one of the staple films of 2017 — its cast and story have captivated and stupified audiences since its premiere. Things have not gone downhill since then — the entire ensemble has been praised over and over for how amazing the film is. Its resonance and uniqueness have rightfully placed this film as one of the best of the year.
If you haven’t seen the film, our best suggestion is to do so immediately.
Blade Runner 2049
Easily one of the most eye-pleasing films of the year.
Blade Runner contains some of the most stunningly beautiful shots of the year. The absolutely epic music that accompanies this film helps make this a work of art for eyes and ears. The plotline, a wonder all on it’s on, makes this a film that cannot be missed.
We wouldn’t be surprised if this film took home some awards for its cinematography alone.
The Big Sick
This is one of the funniest films of the year and the fact that it’s based on a Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon’s real life romance, makes this film a must-watch.
Funny, heartwarming, heart-breaking and impactful, this film will leave you wanting more. Everyone is funny in their own right, but the comedians with cameos remind you that there are lots of stand-up left to watch.
Baby Driver
What! A! Soundtrack!
Magnificent music, fast cars and lots of good-looking people — this film is absolutely epic. It’s jam-packed with action and the music will leave your heart racing after every single scene. Baby Driver is impactful, a thrill-ride and it’ll remind you that films involving fast cars don’t need six follow-up films.
Coco
When we saw this film, there wasn’t a dry eye in the audience by the end of it. Absolutely heart-warming, this film is bound to win many, many awards in early 2018.
The detailing and colors of this film only make us sit in awe at the magnificent work animators do. Pixar has completely outdone themselves with the stunning scenes and tremendous attention to detail.
Dunkirk
Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk has received thousands of reviews since it’s release. It’s visually stunning, the score is amazingly well-put and the silence of the film makes this one of the most impactful films of the year.
The ensemble, actors who are all extremely talented, is bound to continue to receive recognition for one of the best films of the year.
I,Tonya
Based on the incredible true story, I, Tonya is funny and absolutely marvelous. Margot Robbie manages to bring so much uniqueness to a film that could have easily become more dramatic.
The cast makes this film — everyone is remarkable and the chemistry between everyone makes this a must-watch. We cannot say enough good things about this film, it’s just too good to miss out on.
The Post
Based on one of the biggest cover-ups in American history, The Post is remarkable in its ability to be relevant today. The film’s premise is the battle between journalists and the government to unravel the truth behind The Pentagon Paper’s.
Astounding, remarkable and eye-opening, this film allows for audiences to continue to push for the honesty that belies good, honest journalism.
The Disaster Artist
The Room, deemed one of the worst films in history, is the basis for this film.
Its subtle humor and its new take on filmmaking, make this worth watching. You don’t have to watch The Room before you watch this — this film allows us to peek into the mind of one of the most confusing and mysterious directors to exist.
The Shape of Water
Guillermo del Toro is strange. His films are enticing because they’re different — his imagination and his creativity allow for his films to feel like they belong from another world.
This film is no different — The Shape of Water is captivating because it’s exactly that. People know that anything touched by del Toro will be beautiful. This movie takes things that are unconventional and makes them beautiful — he brings these things to the forefront because he knows he can capture the beauty of being different.
Call Me By Your Name
Stunning, heartbreaking and emotionally-capturing — Luca Guadagnino has set himself apart by creating a story that is different and familiar to us. A love story, a beautiful Italian town and characters whose love is apparent to the audience.
Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer have a chemistry that makes it difficult to look away from the screen. This film has swept awards already and we cannot wait to see what else is in store for this great film.
